Understanding the interactions between molecules and sensing elements is crucial to improving sensors. We present one step toward getting closer to the breach between theory and empirical sensor development. Through density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we explored the changes in some optical properties of pristine graphene (G), graphene oxide (GO), and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) interacting with one molecule of acetaminophen (APAP).

Introduction: The aim of this study is to evaluate and compare the suitability of routine blood neutrophil values as indicators of obesity-associated inflammation.

Methods: In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we assess absolute neutrophil counts (ANCs) and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) values in subjects with and without obesity and analyze the weight of both parameters on the disease. Additionally, correlation studies between ANC and NLR with BMI, a parameter internationally accepted to define obesity are performed.

The present study evaluated the performance of the fungus Trichoderma reesei to tolerate and biodegrade the herbicide diuron in its agrochemical presentation in agar plates, liquid culture, and solid-state fermentation. The tolerance of T. reesei to diuron was characterized through a non-competitive inhibition model of the fungal radial growth on the PDA agar plate and growth in liquid culture with glucose and ammonium nitrate, showing a higher tolerance to diuron on the PDA agar plate (inhibition constant 98.

Dietary restriction in the form of fasting is a putative key to a healthier and longer life, but these benefits may come at a trade-off with reproductive fitness and may affect the following generation(s). The potential inter- and transgenerational effects of long-term fasting and starvation are particularly poorly understood in vertebrates when they originate from the paternal line. We utilised the externally fertilising zebrafish amenable to a split-egg clutch design to explore the male-specific effects of fasting/starvation on fertility and fitness of offspring independently of maternal contribution.

The verifiability of a suspect's alibi is often interpreted as a sign of innocence. Because the police resources are limited, verifiability could be used to dismiss suspects of minor offenses. We examined whether alibi verifiability actually indicates innocence for minor crimes.

Introduction: Eating disorders (EDs) are serious psychological problems that affect not only the individual, but also their entire environment. The prevalence rates of EDs are higher among the adolescent population. A better understanding of ED risk factors is essential to design effective prevention and intervention programs that focus beyond the areas of weight and appearance.

We investigated the possible adsorption of each of the main building blocks of spider silk: alanine, glycine, leucine, and proline. This knowledge could help develop new biocompatible materials and favors the creation of new biosensors. We used ab initio density functional theory methods to study the variations in the optical absorption, reflectivity, and band structure of a modified graphene surface interacting with these four molecules.

Article Synopsis
  • The zebrafish is gaining traction as a valuable disease model due to its rapid development, ease of genetic manipulation, and similarities in disease-related genes with humans.
  • Research is increasingly focusing on non-coding mutations, highlighting the need for genomic annotation maps for zebrafish, which aids in understanding regulatory elements shared with human diseases.
  • Recent initiatives like DANIO-CODE are creating standardized zebrafish genomics resources, emphasizing the integration of multiomic data and single-cell analysis tools to deepen our understanding of human disease mechanisms.

This work studied, for the first time, the time-frequency characteristics of the vibrations underlying the first fetal heart sound (S1). To this end, the continuous wavelet transform was used to produce time-energy and time-frequency representations of S1 from where five vibrations were studied by their timing, energy, and frequency characteristics in three gestational age groups (early, G1, preterm, G2, and term, G3). Results on a dataset of 1111 S1s (9 phonocardiograms between 33 and 40 weeks) indicate that such representations uncovered a set of five well-defined, non-overlapped, and large-energy vibrations whose features presented interesting behaviors.

Using structural relaxation calculations and first-principles molecular dynamics (FPMD), we performed numerical simulations to explore the interaction of a 2D MoS surface and a platinum atom, calculating the optical properties of the resulting material. We explored three initial positions for the interaction of the Pt atom and the pristine MoS surface, plus another position between Pt and the MoS surface with a sulfur vacancy V. The surface absorbed the Pt atom in all cases considered, with absorption energies ranging from -2.

Introduction: There is currently a growing interest in interventions aimed at the reduction of stigma towards people with emotional difficulties in adolescents. Unfortunately, the number of scales available in Spanish to assess stigma at these ages is limited. This paper aims to adapt and validate the scale of stigmatizing attitudes towards mental health among peers (Peer Mental Health Stigmatization Scale PMHSS-24).

Giardiasis is a diarrheal disease caused by the unicellular parasite Giardia intestinalis, for which metronidazole is the main treatment option. The parasite is dependent on exogenous deoxyribonucleosides for DNA replication and thus is also potentially vulnerable to deoxyribonucleoside analogs. Here, we characterized the G.

We performed ab initio numerical simulations with the density functional theory to investigate the variations in the band structure, optical absorption, and the reflectivity of vacancy-graphene doped with nitrogen, oxygen, and fluorine for different densities. We considered the density values 0.78%, 1.

We evaluated and characterized the biodegradation of the herbicide diuron in its commercial form above its saturation concentration by Lysinibacillus fusiformis acclimatized by sequential batch culturing. Acclimatization was carried out in eight cycles in liquid culture, improving the capacity of L. fusiformis to remove diuron from 55.

Objective: This work explored the reliability of using points on the heart sounds envelope as indicators of the opening and closure of the aortic valve (AVO, AVC) to measure the pre-ejection period (PEP) and the left ventricular ejection time (LVET).

Approach: 36 phonocardiograms (PCGs) from healthy subjects and cardiovascular disease subjects were denoised using single-channel independent component analysis (SCICA) and, from the Hilbert envelopes, the positions of the S1 and S2 peaks were detected (pS1, pS2). Complementarily, the positions of the local maxima of S1 and S2 (mS1, mS2) and the points surrounding pS1 and pS2 (tS1, tS2) were obtained.

Background: Preterm infants have a higher risk of development disorders. Prematurity can be considered a source of stress, in both children and their parents, due to the high number of interventions that they require. Early intervention (EI) programmes have shown to have a positive influence on the neurodevelopment of children with neurological risk.

The identification of ancestral traits is essential to understanding the evolution of any group. In the case of parasitic groups, this helps us understand the adaptation to this lifestyle and a particular host. Most diplomonads are parasites, but there are free-living members of the group nested among the host-associated diplomonads.

Diplomonad parasites of the genus have adapted to colonizing different hosts, most notably the intestinal tract of mammals. The human-pathogenic species, , has been extensively studied at the genome and gene expression level, but no such information is available for other species. Comparative data would be particularly valuable for , which colonizes mice and is commonly used as a prototypic model for investigating host responses to intestinal parasitic infection.
