Inhalation risk assessment of exposure to the selected volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from the facilities of a steel plant.

Concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were investigated in the workplace air of four processes: sintering, cokemaking, hot forming, and cold forming in an integrated iron and steel plant. In addition, the cancer risk was measured for workers in these 4 processes. Seven VOCs (chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, 1,1,2-trichloroethane, trichloroethylene, tetrachloroethylene, benzene, and ethylbenzene) were selected for cancer risk measurement.

Comparison of urinary and plasma cotinine levels during the three trimesters of pregnancy.

Assays of metabolised cotinine are considered to be an accurate measure of exposure to cigarette smoke among pregnant women. We investigated the association and differences between the cotinine levels in maternal urine and blood, and the umbilical cord blood of three tobacco exposure groups at different stages of pregnancy. A prospective study was conducted among 398 pregnant women undergoing prenatal care in different trimesters at two medical centres and one regional hospital in central Taiwan.

Respiratory effects of air pollutants among asthmatics in central Taiwan.

The authors investigated the relationship between respiratory effects and air pollutants among asthmatics in central Taiwan. A total of 12,926 subjects were selected from 8 junior high schools. Data about monthly hospital admissions for respiratory illnesses were collected over a period of 1 yr from the National Insurance Bureau.
