Article Synopsis
  • The text reviews the impact of Covid-19 on the mental health and well-being of pregnant women during the perinatal period, analyzing 42 empirical studies published between December 2019 and September 2021.
  • It identifies overarching themes such as "Impact" and "Emotional Impact," highlighting various factors like demographic influences, socio-economic status, and the quality of maternity service delivery that affect maternal mental health during the pandemic.
  • While there is evidence of increased risk for perinatal mental illness compared to pre-pandemic levels, many studies didn’t find a significant jump in prevalence, stressing the importance of understanding individual risk and protective factors in their specific contexts.

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the impact of pregnancy and pre-existing comorbidities on COVID-19 infections and associated complications of hospitalisation and mortality in women of reproductive age (WRA). The study also compared the risk of severe COVID-19 complications between pregnant women (PW) and non-pregnant women (NPW) with and without pre-existing comorbidities. Special focus was placed on some understudied comorbidities of immunosuppression, chronic renal disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Introduction: Use of telemedicine in abortion care is safe and effective. Patient satisfaction with telemedically supported abortion is high, but as use expands in Britain, little is known about patients' or health professionals' views on how it is best used. We sought the views of both groups on telemedicine's role in abortion provision and how its use might be optimised.

  • The study aimed to understand healthcare professionals' views on abortion regulation and provision in Britain through a survey of 771 participants.
  • A significant majority (over 90%) supported a women's right to choose abortion and preferred it to be viewed as a health issue rather than a legal one; however, many were unaware of legal requirements related to abortion.
  • Most healthcare professionals favored expanding nurses' roles in abortion care, with only a third agreeing that abortion should be standard practice in their services, particularly varying by specialization.

Pregnancy during or soon after treatment with weight loss medication, particularly glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs), is contraindicated due to potential teratogenicity. The aim of this scoping review is to investigate what is known about the use of weight loss medication in women of childbearing age in relation to reproductive health outcomes, focusing on the three medications licenced in the United Kingdom at the time of the search. A systematic search of studies that assessed reproductive health outcomes in women taking either orlistat, liraglutide or semaglutide was undertaken in July 2023 and updated in January 2024 across MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, Scopus, ClinicalTrials.

Background: Weight retention between pregnancies is associated with increased risk of perinatal complications, but it is unclear whether there is an association with offspring weight status. This study aimed to determine whether maternal interpregnancy weight change is associated with offspring overweight/obesity, controlling for confounding variables.

Subjects/methods: Routinely collected linked data from perinatal and child datasets, in Flanders, Belgium were used.

Background: The term 'care-experienced' refers to anyone who is currently in care or has been in care at any stage in their life. A complex interplay of factors leads to care-experienced children and young people (CECYP) experiencing poorer oral health and access to dental care than their peers. A rapid review of the co-production of health and social care research with vulnerable children and young people (CYP) was carried out to inform the development of a co-produced research project exploring the oral health behaviours and access to dental services of CECYP.

Background: Children and young people (CYP) in care experience poorer physical health and overall wellbeing in comparison to their peers. Despite this, relatively little is known about what their oral health needs and behaviours are. The aim of this scoping review was to provide a global perspective on the oral health status and behaviours of CYP in care and care leavers.

Aims: This scoping review aimed to explore three research questions: 1. What is the dental care access for children and young people (CYP) in care and care leavers? 2. What factors influence CYP in care and care leavers' access to dental care? 3.

The dual burden of malnutrition is characterised by the coexistence of undernutrition alongside overweight/obesity and diet-related noncommunicable diseases. It is a paradox which disproportionately affects women and is applicable to those who become pregnant after weight loss surgery. Obesity before and during pregnancy is associated with increased risk of adverse perinatal outcomes in both mother and child.

As the average age of first-time parents continues to rise, there has been a concerted effort by educators, policy makers and several reproductive health groups to improve fertility awareness. This study explored fertility knowledge of lay men and women and healthcare professionals (HCPs) using the same test instrument, providing a new and unique perspective compared with previous studies. Results were obtained from 1082 survey respondents: 347 HCPs, 319 men and 413 women, 105 of whom were trying to conceive (TTC).

Background: The importance of improving men's and women's knowledge of sexual and reproductive health has been emphasised in numerous global health policies. Fertility awareness literature highlights a disproportionately higher number of articles related to pregnancy-prevention compared to pregnancy-planning, which is justifiable in many contexts. However, recent concerted effort to improve fertility-awareness warrants a closer investigation of basic reproductive health terminologies.

Diabetes mellitus increases the risk of adverse maternal and fetal outcomes. Preconception care is vital to minimise complications; however, preconception care service provision is hindered by inadequate knowledge, resources and care fragmentation. Mobile health technology, particularly smartphone apps, could improve preconception care and pregnancy outcomes for women with diabetes.

In 2013, the Danish Health Authorities recommended a change in prophylactic iron supplementation to 40-50 mg/d from gestational week 10. Hence, the aims of the present study were (1) to estimate the prevalence of women who follow the Danish recommendation on iron supplementation during the last 3 weeks of the first trimester of pregnancy and (2) to identify potential sociodemographic, reproductive and health-related pre-pregnancy predictors for iron supplementation during the first trimester. We conducted a cross-sectional study with data from the hospital-based Copenhagen Pregnancy Cohort.
