Chlorophylls and carotenoids are crucial for photosynthesis and plant survival, with ORANGE (OR) protein being pivotal in pigment accumulation. Despite tomato being rich in carotenoids, the roles of OR proteins in tomato have been overlooked. Herein, we characterized two OR genes in tomato, SlOR and SlOR-like, which are highly expressed in stems, leaves, and flowers, with their proteins being localized to chloroplasts.

A cooperative palladium/chiral amine enabled diastereo- and enantioselective [3 + 2] cycloaddition of π-allyl 1,3-dipoles with α,β-unsaturated aldehydes has been developed. A series of highly functionalized cyclopentanes bearing three continuous tertiary stereocenters can be facilely and efficiently obtained in good to excellent yields (51-97%) with synthetically useful diastereo- and enantioselectivity (93-99% ee) under mild reaction conditions. Control experiments and HRMS analyses were conducted to elucidate the possible mechanism.

Potato is the most important non-cereal food crop in the world. Phytophthora infestans and Rhizoctonia solani are responsible for the cause of late blight and black scurf of potato, respectively, which take a decline of potato production and serious economic loss to the producers. As a continuation of the search of natural fungicides from the secondary metabolites of potato associated fungus Trichothecium crotocinigenum, five previously undescribed amide derivatives trichothecroamides A‒E, one previously undescribed cyclopeptide trichothecroamide F, together with three known cyclopeptides, have been obtained.

Soil contamination due to heavy metals, especially cadmium (Cd), poses a growing concern. This study seeks to develop an economical and non-polluting sustainable remediation program for Cd-contaminated soil to address this issue. This study pioneered the exploration of Cd accumulation patterns in three forage species: Lolium multiflorum Lamk (LMJS), Sorghum bicolor × sudanense (SSBJ), and Sorghum sudanense (Piper) Stapf (SUJS) to identify their optimal harvest periods in Cd-contaminated soils.

Eleven cytochalasans (1-11), including six undescribed analogues (1-3 and 5-7) and a new natural product (4), were obtained from the endophytic fungus Boeremia exigua. Their structures and absolute configurations were determined by a combination of extensive spectroscopic techniques, electron circular dichroism (ECD), and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Boerelasin E (1) represented the first cytochalasan possessing a cis-configured Δ double bond.

Article Synopsis
  • Twelve new isoindolin-1-one compounds, named erinacenones A-L, were discovered from the medicinal fungus through liquid cultures.
  • Their structures were determined using various spectroscopic techniques, and the absolute configuration was figured out by comparing optical rotations to literature values.
  • Notably, two pairs of these compounds are isomers differing by one double bond, and two of the compounds showed cytotoxic effects against MCF-7 cancer cell lines with IC values of 24.7 and 18.4 μM.

  • Ciprofol is a new type of anesthesia used during procedures like endoscopy, and they compared it to an older anesthesia called propofol.
  • Researchers looked at 10 studies with over 1,500 patients to see which anesthesia caused less pain and better safety.
  • The results showed that ciprofol caused less injection pain and may lower the risk of a drop in blood pressure compared to propofol, but more studies are needed for a clearer answer.

  • Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) shows altered metabolism, with FUCA1 expression downregulated, correlating with poorer patient outcomes.
  • Enhancing FUCA1 levels reduces ccRCC cell invasion and migration, indicating its potential protective role, influenced by the transcription factor CTCF.
  • FUCA1 impacts the autophagy process in ccRCC by affecting autophagosome-lysosome fusion, while FUCA2 is closely related and serves as a prognostic marker.

  • Phytochelatin synthase (PCS) is essential for detoxifying heavy metals, and this study investigates the molecular characteristics and functional role of the NtPCS1 gene in relation to metal stress, particularly cadmium (Cd).
  • The NtPCS1 enzyme shows increased activity with the order Ag > Cd > Cu > Pb > Hg > Fe > Zn, and its expression is highest in flowers and upregulated by Cd exposure, but overexpressing it in tobacco does not increase Cd accumulation despite producing more phytochelatins.
  • The PCS1 overexpressing tobacco lines are hypersensitive to Cd stress, which can be mitigated by the addition of glutathione (GSH), suggesting that enhancing GSH levels can
