The Chlorophyta sp. isolated from a Tunisian household sewage pond appears promising for effective removal of Bisphenol A (BPA). Efficient and cost-effective technology for contaminants remediation relies on a tradeoff between several parameters such as removal efficiency, microorganism growth, and its tolerance to contaminant toxicity.

Tunisian microalgae are diverse and rarely been studied. This study reports a first investigation of thermophile Chlorophyta isolated from mats community colonizing the geothermal springs in the north of Tunisia at water temperature 60 °C. In the study, the combined effect of temperature and light intensity was investigated on the cell growth, the mother and daughter cells abundance and the extracellular polymeric substances synthesis in batch culture of the isolated species.

Article Synopsis
  • Severe obesity (BMI >30) can lead to obesity hypoventilation syndrome (OHS), often associated with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), characterized by low oxygen and high carbon dioxide levels in the blood.
  • A study over four years involving 62 obese patients with OSAS showed that while both groups had similar demographics and OSAS severity, those with OHS had significantly higher levels of obesity (BMI >40) and more severe blood gas disturbances.
  • The findings suggest that the degree of obesity is a key factor in developing OHS among patients with OSAS, indicating that while OHS and OSAS can occur together, OHS is a separate condition that is not solely dependent on the severity of OSAS
