The quality of pork meat directly influences the price and consumption. The genetic improvement of pigs has mainly focused on high productive efficiency, which has resulted in poor meat quality. Crossbreeds containing commercial and indigenous breeds could improve the meat quality, but identifying breed composition was difficult because of the lack of an ancestry reference panel.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Gan-Jiang-Ling-Zhu (GJLZ) decoction, a classical Chinese herbal prescription, can be applied for the treatment of metabolic diseases including liver steatosis. Although GJLZ decoction has been widely applied clinically for thousands of years, the mechanism of GJLZ decoction behind treatment of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) remains relatively unelucidated.

Aim Of The Study: To elucidate the efficacy of GJLZ decoction in the treatment of NASH and to investigate its underlying mechanisms from an epigenetic perspective.

Background: The modified Glasgow Prognosis Score (mGPS), which considers both inflammatory response and nutritional status, has been linked to the prognosis of various tumors. The relationship between mGPS and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients receiving immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) is still a subject of debate. This meta-analysis aims to comprehensively assess the association between mGPS and survival in NSCLC treated with ICIs.

Metabolism-related diseases, including diabetes mellitus, obesity, hyperlipidemia, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, are becoming increasingly prevalent, thereby posing significant threats to human health and longevity. Proteins, as the primary mediators of biological activities, undergo various posttranslational modifications (PTMs), including phosphorylation, ubiquitination, acetylation, methylation, and SUMOylation, among others, which substantially diversify their functions. These modifications are crucial in the physiological and pathological processes associated with metabolic disorders.

Copper is a vital trace element in human physiology, essential for the synthesis of numerous crucial metabolic enzymes and facilitation of various biological processes. Regulation of copper levels within a narrow range is imperative for maintaining metabolic homeostasis. Numerous studies have demonstrated the significant roles of copper homeostasis and cuproptosis in health and disease pathogenesis.

A strategy for constructing binary metal-organic cage (MOC)-based materials was developed. The cationic MOCs were covalently linked by organic linkers to a cationic extended network, whereas the anionic MOCs acted as counterions and were encapsulated in the network. Compared with the corresponding unary materials, the binary MOC-based materials exhibited improved porosity and adsorption performance.

Background: With the rapid increase of chest computed tomography (CT) images, the workload faced by radiologists has increased dramatically. It is undeniable that the use of artificial intelligence (AI) image-assisted diagnosis system in clinical treatment is a major trend in medical development. Therefore, in order to explore the value and diagnostic accuracy of the current AI system in clinical application, we aim to compare the detection and differentiation of benign and malignant pulmonary nodules between AI system and physicians, so as to provide a theoretical basis for clinical application.

Objectives: The centrifugal ultrafiltration-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) method was established to determine the free perampanel (PER) concentration in children with epilepsy.

Methods: Free PER concentration was obtained using centrifugal ultrafiltration devices. The internal standard was PER-D5.

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) based on steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEP) have received widespread attention due to their high information transmission rate, high accuracy, and rich instruction set. However, the performance of its identification methods strongly depends on the amount of calibration data for within-subject classification. Some studies use deep learning (DL) algorithms for inter-subject classification, which can reduce the calculation process, but there is still much room for improvement in performance compared with intra-subject classification.

Transition metal dichalcogenide TiSe exhibits a superconducting dome within a low pressure range of 2-4 GPa, which peaks with the maximal transition temperature T of ≈1.8 K. Here it is reported that applying high pressure induces a new superconducting state in TiSe, which starts at ≈16 GPa with a substantially higher T that reaches 5.

Composite indoor human activity recognition is very important in elderly health monitoring and is more difficult than identifying individual human movements. This article proposes a sensor-based human indoor activity recognition method that integrates indoor positioning. Convolutional neural networks are used to extract spatial information contained in geomagnetic sensors and ambient light sensors, while transform encoders are used to extract temporal motion features collected by gyroscopes and accelerometers.

For the first time, hierarchical porous amorphous metal-organic frameworks (HP-aMOFs) containing ultramicropores, micropores, and mesopores were synthesized by etching a composite of MOF glass (agZIF-76) and ZnO using ammonia. These materials show potential applications in the adsorption of C2 hydrocarbons.

Objectives: Lung cancer is one of the most common malignant tumors threatening human life and health. At present, low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) screening for the high-risk population to achieve early diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer has become the first choice recommended by many authoritative international medical organizations. To further optimize the lung cancer screening method, we conducted a real-world study of LDCT lung cancer screening in a large sample of a healthy physical examination population, comparing differences in lung nodules and lung cancer detection between thin and thick-slice LDCT scanning.

Article Synopsis
  • Bunting total alkaloid (CSBTA) was tested for its antibacterial effects using various scientific methods like SEM, RT-qPCR, and ELISA.
  • CSBTA treatment led to significant changes, such as the shrinkage and rupture of bacteria, reduced biofilm density, and lower expression of virulence-related mRNA genes.
  • The findings suggest that CSBTA kills free bacteria, disrupts biofilm formation, and could potentially serve as a new drug for treating bacterial infections.

Few real-world analyses of the ability of vaccines to protect against severe COVID-19 have been published. In this real-world study, we compared the prevalence of severe or critical COVID-19 between patients at our hospital who were not vaccinated against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) or who had been vaccinated partial, full, or booster course with the CoronaVac, containing inactivated virus propagated in Vero cells. Data from electronic health records were retrospectively analyzed for 4090 inpatients with COVID-19 who were treated at West China Hospital, Chengdu between December 6, 2022 and February 14, 2023.

Vaccines have proven effective in protecting populations against COVID-19, including the recombinant COVID-19 vaccine (Sf9 cells), the first approved recombinant protein vaccine in China. In this positive-controlled trial with 85 adult participants (Sf9 cells group: n = 44; CoronaVac group: n = 41), we evaluated the safety, immunogenicity, and protective effectiveness of a heterologous boost with the Sf9 cells vaccine in adults who had been vaccinated with the inactivated vaccine, and found a post-booster adverse events rate of 20.45% in the Sf9 cells group and 31.

RNA methylation modifications, as a widespread type of modification in eukaryotic cells, especially N6-methyladenosine (mA), are associated with many activities in organisms, including macrophage polarization and progression of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Macrophages in the liver are of diverse origin and complex phenotype, exhibiting different functions in development of NASH. In the review, we discuss the functions of mA and mA-related enzymes in macrophage polarization.
