NaV(PO) (NVP) with typical NASICON structure is highly regarded as one of the most appealing cathodes for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) for their excellent structural stability; however, the poor electronic conductivity and irreversible phase transition at high voltage (∼4 V) for the material result in poor rate capabilities and significant capacity degradation during electrochemical reactions. Herein, the high-entropy doping strategy of introducing six types of metal ions into the V-sites in NaV(PO) is used to design a high-performance cathode of NaV(Mn, Ca, Mg, Al, Zr)Nb(PO) (HE-NVP) for SIBs. After the high-entropy doping, a reversible V/V redox pair is activated at high voltage of ∼4 V, which significantly contributes to the enhancement of energy density and operating voltage.

The lateral moving resistance of a liquid droplet on a solid surface generally increases with velocity and is dominated by the non-viscous wetting line friction. Many superhydrophobic man-made and biological surfaces have minimal, nevertheless speed-sensitive, water droplet friction, limiting their potential to reduce drag at high speeds in natural situations. Using an surface force apparatus, we demonstrated low and remarkably speed-insensitive (over 300-fold) water bridge sliding friction on a goose feather vane.

Lead isotope analysis is the main method to trace the sources and cycling of Pb in the biosphere system. The linchpin of such application hinges on the assumption that there is negligible or no biologically mediated isotopic fractionation of Pb occurs in the environment. However, recent measurements by high-precision multi-collector mass spectrometry revealed that biological isotope fractionation of heavy mass elements is a prevalent phenomenon.

Environmental magnetism plays an important role in monitoring heavy metal pollution, but most studies are confined to indicating only the levels of heavy metals using magnetic parameters. This study established new magnetic proxies for accurately depicting the sources and bioavailability of heavy metals in contaminated soils. We observed different relationships between χ and SIRM in the soils contaminated by non-ferrous metal smelting compared to those polluted by coal combustion and steel smelting.

The increase in intense tropical cyclone (TC) activity across the western North Pacific (WNP) has often been attributed to a warming ocean. However, it is essential to recognize that the tropical WNP region already boasts high temperatures, and a marginal increase in oceanic warmth due to global warming does not exert a significant impact on the potential for TCs to intensify. Here we report that the weakened vertical wind shear is the primary driver behind the escalating trend in TC intensity within the summer monsoon trough of the tropical WNP, while local ocean surface and subsurface thermodynamic factors play a minor role.
