Granular materials transition between unjammed (deformable) and jammed (rigid) states when adjusting their packing density. Here, we report on experiments demonstrating that the same kind of phase transition can be alternatively achieved through temperature-controlled particle shape change. Using a confined system of randomly-packed rod-like particles made of shape memory alloy (SMA), we exploit that shape recovery of these bent rods with rising temperature at a constant packing density leads to a jammed state.

Flexible fibers, such as biomass particles and glass fibers, are critical raw materials in the energy and composites industries. Assemblies of the fibers show strong interlocking, non-Newtonian and compressible flows, intermittent avalanches, and high energy dissipation rates due to their elongation and flexibility. Conventional mechanical theories developed for regular granular materials, such as dry sands and pharmaceutical powders, are often unsuitable for modeling flexible fibers, which exhibit more complex mechanical behaviors.

Article Synopsis
  • Understanding how the motor cortex adapts during tasks that involve both sides of the body is key to furthering our grasp of how the brain learns and changes (neural plasticity).
  • Researchers used advanced imaging techniques to study specific neurons in mice while they performed a left-right lever-press task, revealing that these neurons behave differently based on whether the movement is on the same side or the opposite side.
  • The study found that these neurons not only adjust their activity patterns over time but also highlight the brain’s flexible reorganization during motor learning, which could be important for developing better rehabilitation strategies for motor skills.

Despite the increasing use of copper in C-H functionalizations, the Cu-catalyzed direct deuteration of C-H bonds remains a significant challenge due to its inherent low reactivity in inverse C-H bond reconstruction. In this paper, a novel strategy had been developed to reverse the copper-catalyzed concerted metalation-deprotonation process by inhibiting the unexpected disproportionation of Cu(II) to Cu(III). Picolinic acid was identified as a powerful ligand for facilitating this H/D exchange with DO as deuterium source, and its inhibition activity was supported by preliminary control experiments and DFT studies.

Contextual fear conditioning has been shown to activate a set of "fear ensemble" cells in the hippocampal dentate gyrus (DG) whose reactivation is necessary and sufficient for expression of contextual fear. We previously demonstrated that extinction learning suppresses reactivation of these fear ensemble cells and activates a competing set of DG cells-the "extinction ensemble." Here, we tested whether extinction was sufficient to suppress reactivation in other regions and used single nucleus RNA sequencing (snRNA-seq) of cells in the dorsal dentate gyrus to examine how extinction affects the transcriptomic activity of fear ensemble and fear recall-activated cells.

  • Contextual fear conditioning activates specific "fear ensemble" cells in the hippocampal dentate gyrus (DG), which are crucial for expressing fear memories.
  • Extinction learning not only suppresses these fear ensemble cells but also activates a competing "extinction ensemble" in the DG.
  • RNA sequencing showed that extinction training significantly alters the transcription patterns in fear ensemble cells, indicating that extinction suppresses fear responses in the hippocampus and introduces a unique transcriptional profile for extinction-related cells.

MXenes, two-dimensional transition (2D) metal carbides/nitrides, have shown promise as cathodic catalysts for accelerating the conversion of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) in lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries due to their diverse redox-active sites and rapid electron transfer. However, efficiently screening the optimal cathodic catalysts out of thousands of MXenes is challenging. To address this, we developed a model that accurately predicts the thermodynamic energy barrier of the rate-limiting step in Li-S batteries.

Subcallosal cingulate gyrus (SCG) is a target of deep brain stimulation (DBS) for treatment-resistant depression. However, previous randomized controlled trials report that approximately 42% of patients are responders to this therapy of last resort, and suboptimal targeting of SCG is a potential underlying factor to this unsatisfactory efficacy. Tractography has been proposed as a supplementary method to enhance targeting strategy.
