Transmembrane transports of four kinds of lipophilic organic chemicals (LOCs) on suspending multilamellar liposomes (SML) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) were investigated, where both anthracene and phenanthrene were accorded to the lipid-water partition law and Sudan I and III to the Langmuir isothermal adsorption. Less than half of phenanthrene is transported into E.

Two bacteria strains Sphingomonas sp. strain ZP1 and Tistrella sp. strain ZP5 were identified as phenanthrene-degrading ones, based on Gram staining, oxydase reaction, biochemical tests, FAME analysis, G+C content and 16S rDNA gene sequence analysis.

Background: Sudan red compounds are hydrophobic azo dyes, still used as food additives in some countries. However, they have been shown to be unsafe, causing tumors in the liver and urinary bladder in rats. They have been classified as category 3 human carcinogens by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.

The chromophore, 3-(5-chlor-2-hydroxy-3-sulfophenylazo)-6-(2,4,6-tribromophenylazo)-4,5-dihydroxynaphthalene-2,7-disulfonic acid (CSTDD) was used to complex Cu(II) and Co(II) in aqueous solution at pH 9.43. A binuclear complex of Cu-CSTDD-Co was formed and showed a high selectivity for the determination of Co(II).
