A dual catalytic approach enlisting gold and iron synergy is described. This method offers readily access to substituted heterocycle aldehydes via oxygen radical addition to vinyl-gold intermediates under Fe catalyst assistance. This system shows good functional group compatibility for the generation of substituted oxazole, indole, and benzofuran aldehydes.

An efficient and practical system for inexpensive bromination and iodination of arenes as well as heteroarenes by using readily available dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and HX (X = Br, I) reagents is reported. This mild oxidative system demonstrates a versatile protocol for the synthesis of aryl halides. HX (X = Br, I) are employed as halogenating reagents when combined with DMSO which participates in the present chemistry as a mild and inexpensive oxidant.

A unique copper-catalyzed aerobic oxidative C-C bond cleavage of simple unstrained ketones with air and amines has been developed. In this chemistry, amides and oxo amides are easily synthesized through the selective C-C bond cleavage of simple ketones or unstrained cycloketones. The broad substrate scopes and use of an inexpensive copper catalyst and green molecular oxygen as an oxidant as well as an O-source make this protocol very attractive for potential synthetic applications.

An efficient Mn-catalyzed aerobic oxidative hydroxyazidation of olefins for synthesis of β-azido alcohols has been developed. The aerobic oxidative generation of azido radical employing air as the terminal oxidant is disclosed as the key process for this transformation. The reaction is appreciated by its broad substrate scope, inexpensive Mn-catalyst, high efficiency, easy operation under air, and mild conditions at room temperature.

An intermolecular nitrogenation reaction toward the synthesis of phenanthridines has been developed. This metal-free protocol provides a novel nitrogen-incorporation transformation using azides as the nitrogen source. Phenanthridines, which are of great interest in pharmaceutical and medicinal chemistry, are synthesized efficiently in one step.

Objective: To test the efficacy of a family-assisted smoking cessation intervention based on Motivational interviewing (MI) among low-motivated Chinese smokers.

Methods: A two-armed randomized controlled trial study design was utilized. 159 Smoker-supporter pairs were randomly allocated to the intervention (a family-assisted MI intervention-77) or control (an intensity-matched health education-82) group (IG & CG).

Aerobic anoxygenic phototrophic bacteria (AAPB) represent a widespread functional bacterial group defined by their obligate aerobic and facultative photoheterotrophic abilities. They are an active part of the marine microbial community as revealed by a large number of previous investigations. Here, we made an in-depth comparison of AAPB community structures in the subsurface water and the upper twilight zone of the western Pacific Ocean using high-throughput sequencing based on the pufM gene.

Nitrate uptake by heterotrophic bacteria plays an important role in marine N cycling. However, few studies have investigated the diversity of environmental nitrate assimilating bacteria (NAB). In this study, the diversity and biogeographical distribution of NAB in several global oceans and particularly in the western Pacific marginal seas were investigated using both cultivation and culture-independent molecular approaches.

A highly selective copper-catalyzed concise synthesis of 3,5-diarylpyridine and 2-(1H)-pyridone has been achieved through cascade Chichibabin-type cyclization, C(sp(3))-C(sp(3)) cleavage, and aerobic oxidation. Azide, ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN), and 2-aminopyridine are disclosed as efficient nitrogen donors in this Cu-catalysis using O2 as the oxidant. Water and molecular oxygen were employed as the oxygen source in the case of oxygenation.
