A highly sensitive volt-ampere characteristics detecting system was applied to measure the volt-ampere curves of nine acupuncture points, LU9, HT7, LI4, PC6, ST36, SP6, KI3, LR3, and SP3, and corresponding nonacupuncture points bilaterally from 42 healthy volunteers. Electric currents intensity was increased from 0 μA to 20 μA and then returned to 0 μA again. Based on the literature review and theories of biophysical theory, the pathway and mechanism of the heat of sandwiched moxibustion stimulating acupoints are analyzed. It is concluded that the heat of sandwiched moxibustion is transferred to the skin of acupoints by heat conduction and thermal radiation. We have analysed the significance of acupoint resistance and some probable problems in its measurement according to biophysics theories and we believe that the skin resistance plays an important role in acupoint resistance. The Volt-ampere curve should be used to describe acupoint resistance, and only when the measurements are under the same condition should the results be compared, because acupoint resistance is nonlinear. The acupoint resistance could be detected only in vivo.
