The human calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR) detects fluctuations in the extracellular Ca concentration and maintains Ca homeostasis. It also mediates diverse cellular processes not associated with Ca balance. The functional pleiotropy of CaSR arises in part from its ability to signal through several G-protein subtypes.

Article Synopsis
  • * A new macrocyclic peptide, TDI-8304, has been created, showing strong selectivity for the parasite's proteasome over humans and effective results in lab and live tests against P. falciparum.
  • * Research reveals that mutations in the Pf20S proteasome can lead to drug resistance, but also create opportunities for designing more effective inhibitors by understanding how these mutations impact drug binding and efficacy.*

Objective: A total of 5,200 pregnant women in Zhaoqing city, Guangdong Province, were screened to identify spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) mutation carriers to guide the prevention of SMA and prevent the birth of children with SMA.

Methods: Exons 7 and 8 (E7 and E8) of the survival motor neuron (SMN) 1 gene were detected in women using real-time fluorescence quantitative polymerase chain reaction. SMN1 and SMN2 copy numbers in those who were initially identified as carriers were verified via targeted region capture and next-generation sequencing.
