They acted as nitrogen nucleophiles toward ethyl propiolate to produce polyfunctionalized pyrrole derivatives in high yields. When treated with dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate, they behaved exclusively as sulfur nucleophiles to afford fully substituted thiophenes in excellent yields.
