miR-135a is highly expressed in patients with gestational diabetes mellitus, and its target genes are also involved in insulin signaling pathway, so it is one biomarker for gestational diabetes mellitus. Herein we designed a dual-mode DNA biosensor for reliable assay of miR-135a based on the fluorescence and colorimetric signals. Several experiments were carried out to demonstrate the assay feasibility and mechanism for this dual-mode DNA biosensor.

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate whether Osteonectin/Secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine (ON/SPARC) had a two-way dose-dependent regulatory effect on osteoblast mineralization and its molecular mechanism.

Methods: Initially, different concentrations of ON were added in osteoblasts, and the gene of bone sialoprotein (BSP), osteocalcin (OCN), osteopontin (OPN) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) were detected using reverse-transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Secondly, based on the above results, the Optima and inhibitory concentration of ON for osteoblast mineralization were determined and regrouped, the Control group was also set up, and the gene detections of Collagen 1 (Col 1), Discoidin domain receptor 2 (DDR2) and p38 mitogen‑activated protein kinase were added using RT-PCR.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a serious threat to human health. However, the etiology and pathogenesis of the disease are not fully understood. Most researchers believe that the degeneration and imbalance of articular cartilage, extracellular matrix, and subchondral bone are the fundamental causes of osteoarthritis.

Background: Total hip replacement (THR) for Crowe type IV developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is still challenging due to specific joint deformities and the high incidence of post-operative complications.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the clinical effect of trochanteric slide osteotomy (TSO) combined with a cementless femoral conical stem in THR for the treatment of Crowe type IV DDH.

Methods: Thirty-one total hip replacements (26 patients) with Crowe type IV DDH were performed using TSO combined with a cementless femoral conical stem.

Objective: To retrospectively analyze the changes of thyroid function and related factors in critical patients with non-thyroid illness, hoping to find some indicators for the further examination of the thyroid function in the intensive care unit situation.

Methods: The clinical data of 52 patients admitted to the ICU of Fuzhou First Hospital in Fujian Province, China, from May 2018 to March 2019 were collected. Patients were allocated into the central hypothyroidism group (CH group, n = 21) and the low T syndrome group (LTS group, n = 31) based on thyroid function.

Background/aim: Exosomal miRNAs are promising tumor biomarkers. This research explored the diagnostic value of serum exosomal miRNAs by analyzing the exosomal miRNAs derived from the serum of gastric cancer patients.

Methods: Deep sequencing of exosomal miRNAs was performed using an Illumina HiSeq2500 sequencer on serum samples from three healthy subjects in the normal control group (group N) and six gastric cancer patients in the gastric cancer treatment group (group T).

Objective: The present study aimed to determine the role of the discoidin domain receptor 2 (DDR2) in the osteonectin (ON) regulation of osteoblast mineralization through the activation of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK).

Methods: Four groups were established: the ON group, the inhibitor group, the Ddr2-small interfering ribonucleic acid (siRNA) group, and the control group. Osteoblasts from the parietal bones of neonatal Sprague-Dawley rats were isolated and cultured.

Background: Haemolymphangioma arising from the small bowel and its mesentery is extremely rare in the clinical setting. To date, only 8 cases of small bowel haemolymphangioma have been reported, and there have been no previously reported cases of haemolymphangioma in the small bowel mesentery (PubMed). The formation of this tumour is mostly congenital, but the exact mechanism is still unclear.

Objective: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection causes liver fibrosis, cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) development, but the underlying mechanism remains poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the roles and molecular mechanisms of Dystrobrevin-α (DTNA) in HBV-induced liver cirrhosis and HCC pathogenesis.

Methods: DTNA expression was bioinformatically analyzed using the GEO database.
