Herein, we describe a highly stereoselective method to access a single olefin isomer from readily available β-hydroxy -hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) esters. Depending on the configuration of the precursor ( or ), either the or olefin is prepared selectively under Lewis acid-promoted conditions. Without involving radical chemistry, a β-lactone is proposed as the key intermediate in this decarboxylative olefination.

Transparent biodegradable packaging materials capable of blocking the broad-spectrum of UV and blue light (200-500 nm) are crucial for packaging of light-sensitive food. This study offers a fully bio-based solution based on polylactide and natural light absorbers, aloe-emodin (AE) and riboflavin (RF), whose combined UV-vis absorption spectrum covers all the light between 200 and 500 nm. AE and RF were bonded to polylactide chains by serving as initiators for the ring-opening polymerization of lactide, resulting in the synthesis of light-blocking polylactides, PLA-E and PLA-R.

Helical molecular carbons (HMCs) possess high absorption/luminescence dissymmetry factors (g/g) and significant luminescence quantum yield (Φ), resulting in a high circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) brightness (B), which is essential for the development of CPL materials for practical applications. Herein, we designed and synthesized a series of boron-nitrogen (BN)-doped HMCs, named π-extended heli(aminoborane)s (E[10]HAB-A, E[10]HAB-B and E[10]HAB-C), consisting of laterally π-extended [10]helicene skeleton with alternating N and B atoms at the inner rim. The aromaticity, electronic structures, and photophysical properties of E[10]HAB-A/B/C were systematically investigated through experiments and theoretical calculations.

The barrier properties of polylactic acid (PLA) to four typical binary aqueous solutions with sodium chloride (NaCl), sodium lauryl polyoxyethylene ether sulfate (SELS), acetic acid (AcOH), and ethanol (EtOH) as solute respectively were studied by investigating the adhesion work from contact angle and surface tension, measuring the water diffusion coefficient (D) from time-resolved infrared spectroscopy (TRIS), and detecting the solute permeation rate (P) from permeation. The results illustrate that, among the four solutions and the single water, the single water shows the biggest adhesion work to the PLA, being 89.2 J/m, and the interaction between the solution and PLA is closely correlated with the structure of the solution.

Due to thiolate's fast and robust coordination, crystallographically resolved thiolate-ligated metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are hard to obtain. Following the previous success of the masked synthetic strategy to achieve single-crystal Pb-thiolate connected MOFs, thioester-protected hexathiotriphenylene (HVaTT) was employed in this work to assemble with a Zn(II) centre to yield the first example of a first-row transition-metal based crystallographically resolved metal-tetrathiolate connected MOF, HTT-Zn. HTT-Zn features a 3D anionic framework connected by tetrahedral [ZnS] nodes with 3-fold interpenetration and windmill-like topology.

The first shikimic acid derived fluorescent carbon dots (SACNDs-FITC) for multi-modal detection and simultaneous removal of Hg is revealed. The fluorescence of SACNDs-FITC centered at 520 nm can be selectively quenched by Hg, while the emission centered at 420 nm remains constant which can be used for self-calibration. Naked-eye distinguishable color change from yellow to colourless under daylight and from green to blue under UV light could be observed for SACNDs-FITC in the real-time detection of Hg.

Large case-control genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have detected loci associated with insomnia, but how these risk loci confer disease risk remains largely unknown. By integrating brain protein quantitative trait loci (pQTL) (N = 376, N = 152) and expression QTL (eQTL) (N = 452) datasets, with the latest insomnia GWAS summary statistics (N = 109,548, N = 277440), we conducted proteome/transcriptome-wide association study (PWAS/TWAS) and Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis, aiming to identify causal proteins involving in the pathogenesis of insomnia. We also explored the bi-directional causality between insomnia and several common diseases.

In order to improve the oxygen barrier performance of poly(lactic acid) (PLA), a simple and economical melt blending method was chosen and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVOH) with excellent oxygen barrier was used as the reinforcing phase to meet high oxygen needs. To improve compatibility, PLA was grafted onto PVOH through L-LA ring opening polymerization to get poly(vinyl alcohol)-graft-poly(lactic acid) (PVOH-g-PLA). The films with high oxygen barrier performance were prepared by blending PLA with PVOH-g-PLA.

PARP inhibitors sensitize pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) to radiation by inducing DNA damage and replication stress. These mechanisms also have the potential to enhance radiation-induced type I interferon (T1IFN)-mediated antitumoral immune responses. We hypothesized that the PARP inhibitor olaparib would also potentiate radiation-induced T1IFN to promote antitumor immune responses and sensitization of otherwise resistant PDAC to immunotherapy.
