A malignant tumor is a complex systemic disease involving the nervous system, which regulates nerve signals. Cancer neuroscience is a field that explores the interactions between tumors and the nervous system. The gastrointestinal tract is a typical peripheral organ with abundant neuroregulation and is regulated by the peripheral, enteric, and central nervous systems (PNS, ENS, and CNS, respectively).

Article Synopsis
  • Mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress are crucial factors in diabetic retinal damage, and the study investigates the antioxidant Honokiol (HKL) for its potential protective effects against diabetic retinopathy (DR).
  • Using a type 2 diabetic mouse model, HKL was found to reduce retinal vascular leakage and capillary cell apoptosis, enhancing cell viability and decreasing oxidative stress when exposed to high glucose levels.
  • The protective effects of HKL were linked to the activation of sirtuin 3 (SIRT3), suggesting that HKL improves mitochondrial function and offers a potential new treatment approach for DR.

Article Synopsis
  • Oxidative stress in endothelial cells contributes significantly to diabetic retinopathy (DR), and maintaining mitochondrial homeostasis is crucial for reducing this stress.
  • The study investigated how mitochondrial sirtuins (SIRTs), specifically SIRT3, affect oxidative stress and mitochondrial function in retinal microvascular endothelial cells exposed to high glucose (HG) conditions.
  • Findings revealed that high glucose exposure decreased cell viability and SIRT3 levels while increasing cell death and reactive oxygen species (ROS), but overexpressing SIRT3 helped restore cell health and mitochondrial dynamics, particularly via the optic atrophy 1 (OPA1) pathway.

A fluorescent probe derived from purine with Schiff base moiety was developed for the recognization of glyphosate and mesotrione. The detected glyphosate and mesotrione can lead to the dissociation of the Schiff base probe to enhance the fluorescence via a turn-off PET process. Mechanism study revealed that the synergistic effect of the phosphoric acid and the secondary amine moieties in glyphosate results in the bond cleavage of the Schiff base probe.

Background: Acute lung injury (ALI)-induced acute respiratory syndromes is a critical pathological sequala of sepsis. Araloside A (ARA), extracted from Aralia taibaiensis, possesses anti-oxidative and pro-apoptotic effects, as well as a protective effect against inflammatory diseases such as gastric ulcers. However, its impact on progression of ALI remains unknown.

Objectives: Silicone oil (SO) is a commonly used intraocular tamponade in the treatment of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD). SO emulsification is a common complication after SO injection. This study aimed to investigate correlations between SO emulsification signs on ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) and the real number/size of SO droplets.

Background: Periodontal ligament cells (PDLCs) are a major component of the periodontal ligament and have an important role in the regeneration of periodontal tissue and maintenance of homeostasis. High glucose can affect the activity and function of PDLCs in a variety of ways; therefore, it is particularly important to find ways to alleviate the effects of high glucose on PDLCs. Annexin A2 (ANXA2) is a calcium- and phospholipid-binding protein involved in a variety of cellular functions and processes, including cellular cytokinesis, cytophagy, migration, and proliferation.

Objective: This article focus on patients with moderate-to-severe periodontitis and periodontitis patients with cardiovascular disease. After they received periodontal initial therapy or antimicrobial drug treatment, was there any improvement in endothelial function during short- and long-term followups?

Method: Relevant randomized controlled trials and clinical trials up to 30th June 2024 were identified and retrieved from electronic databases including PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science and CNKI databases, with periodontitis therapy, periodontal disease and endothelial function as the keywords. The weighted (WMD) or standardized mean difference (SMD) was calculated using a fixed- or random-effect model and assessed heterogeneous results.

Objective: Previous studies have suggested that irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is strongly associated with psychiatric disorders. However, it is unclear whether this association is causal, concomitant, or accidental. Thus, we performed Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to evaluate the causal effects of several psychiatric disorders on IBS.

Sepsis remains a significant global health burden and contributor to mortality, yet the precise molecular mechanisms underlying the immune response are not fully elucidated. To gain insight into this issue, we performed a comprehensive analysis using a variety of techniques including bulk RNA sequencing, single-cell RNA sequencing, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). We performed enrichment analysis of differentially expressed genes in sepsis and healthy individuals by utilizing Gene Ontology (GO) analysis and indicated significant enrichment of immune-related response.

Article Synopsis
  • Biofilms on submerged macrophytes help improve water quality in areas using reclaimed water, specifically by absorbing 20%-35% of nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients.
  • Using 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing, researchers found that the bacterial community on these macrophytes differs significantly from that in surrounding environments and activated sludge.
  • Various submerged macrophyte species and reclaimed water quality impacted the bacterial community, with water quality having a greater effect than the type of macrophyte.

Introduction: Sepsis, a systemic immune syndrome caused by severe trauma or infection, poses a substantial threat to the health of patients worldwide. The progression of sepsis is heavily influenced by septic liver injury, which is triggered by infection and cytokine storms, and has a significant impact on the tolerance and prognosis of septic patients. The objective of our study is to elucidate the biological role and molecular mechanism of fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) in the process of sepsis.

Organophosphorus pesticides play an important role as broad-spectrum inactivating herbicides in agriculture. Developing a method for rapid and efficient organophosphorus pesticides detection is still urgent due to the increasing concern on food safety. An organo-probe (ZDA), synthesized by purine hydrazone derivative and 2,2'-dipyridylamine derivative, was applied in sensitive recognition of Cu with detection limit of 300 nM.

  • * Analysis of data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) shows that NRAV is significantly more expressed in cancer tissues compared to normal ones, with higher levels correlating to lower overall survival rates across various tumors.
  • * NRAV's upregulation affects cell behavior in HCC, influencing migration, invasion, and key immune checkpoint markers, suggesting it could serve as a valuable prognostic biomarker for this type of cancer.

The nucleolus, a membrane-less organelle, is responsible for ribosomal RNA transcription, ribosomal RNA processing, and ribosome assembly. Nucleolar size and number are indicative of a cell's protein synthesis rate and proliferative capacity, and abnormalities in the nucleolus have been linked to neurodegenerative diseases and cancer. In this study, we demonstrated that the nucleolar protein ZNF692 directly interacts with nucleophosmin 1 (NPM1).
