Article Synopsis
  • A randomized phase 3 trial in China assessed the efficacy and safety of cofrogliptin, a new diabetes medication, in drug-naïve type 2 diabetes patients.
  • The trial involved 475 patients divided into three groups: cofrogliptin 10 mg, cofrogliptin 25 mg, and a placebo over 24 weeks, with an additional 28-week extension for those on cofrogliptin.
  • Results showed that cofrogliptin significantly reduced glycated hemoglobin levels compared to placebo and was well tolerated, with common side effects including hyperuricaemia and infections, but no notable differences in hypoglycemia incidents.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study presents a novel method for creating a highly effective sludge biochar (ASMS91) from a mix of agrochemical-pharmaceutical and municipal sludge, achieving a significantly high surface area and pore volume.
  • - ASMS91 demonstrates impressive capabilities in wastewater treatment, removing 45.3% of contaminants in just 24 hours, outperforming commercial activated carbon and showing strong adsorption for long-chain compounds.
  • - The biochar is highly recyclable, with minimal reduction in performance over multiple cycles, and excels in removing various harmful substances, which supports its potential for practical use in chemical wastewater treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • A rare case of primary hyperaldosteronism combined with type 3 autoimmune polyendocrine syndrome was observed in a 63-year-old woman, presenting initially with hypertension.
  • The patient's autoimmune conditions included type 1 diabetes mellitus and Hashimoto's thyroiditis, alongside adrenal cortical adenoma diagnosed after surgery.
  • Comprehensive treatment involved adrenal adenoma removal, which quickly resolved her hypertension and normalized serum potassium levels, followed by insulin and levothyroxine replacement therapy.

Background: Von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) syndrome is characterized by tumorous lesions affecting multiple organs. Pancreatic involvement in VHL syndrome can present as endocrine tumors and pancreatic cysts, which can interfere with both exocrine and endocrine functions of the pancreas. Diabetes is an uncommon complication of VHL syndrome.

Background: Pituitary stalk interruption syndrome (PSIS) is a congenital disease commonly found in patients with combined pituitary hormone deficiency (CPHD). Most PSIS patients manifest growth retardation and delayed puberty. We report a rare case of PSIS with tall stature, liver cirrhosis and diabetes, possibly caused by an inactivating gene mutation.

As China transitions towards a green and low-carbon energy system, it is crucial to have the support of green finance. In this study, we explore the effects of synergy and spatial spillovers in the development of green finance and the consumption of renewable energy. By taking a synergistic perspective, we aim to provide new insights for energy structure reform.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study examined how injecting umbilical cord blood mononuclear cells (UCBMCs) into the scrotum affects sexual function in older male mice.
  • - After one month, the UCBMCs were found to survive and led to increased testosterone, cGMP levels, and nitric oxide synthase activity in the mice’s reproductive tissues.
  • - The findings suggest that UCBMCs can enhance sexual performance in older males by boosting testosterone and activating the NOS/cGMP pathway, offering a potential new treatment for erectile dysfunction.

Objectives: The activation of immune cells plays a significant role in the progression of type 2 diabetes. This study aimed to investigate the potential role of myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) and T-regulatory cells (Tregs) in type 2 diabetes.

Methods: A total of 61 patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes were recruited.

Aims: Diabetes mellitus (DM), one of the most common chronic diseases in China, is a risk factor for SARS-COV-2 infection and poor prognosis of COVID-19. The COVID-19 vaccine is one of the key measures to control the pandemic. However, the actual coverage of COVID-19 vaccination and associated factors remain unclear among DM patients in China.

Introduction: Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) and diabetic retinopathy (DR) share similar pathophysiological mechanisms. However, signs of DKD may be present at diagnosis of diabetes without retinopathy. Risk factors for the development of DKD and DR may not be identical.

Trial Design: Our study is to investigate the feasibility and effectiveness of multiple cardiovascular factors intervention (MFI) in type 2 diabetes patients in China's primary care setting.

Methods: We performed a cluster randomized trial to compare the proportion of patients achieved the targets between usual care group (control, 9 sites, n = 868) and MFI group (8 sites, n = 739) among patients with type 2 diabetes in primary care setting. Logistic regression model with random effects was used to estimate the association of the effect of intervention and the proportion achieved the targets.

Objectives: This study assessed the efficacy, safety, pharmacokinetics (PK), and immunogenicity profiles of a denosumab biosimilar (LY06006) in Chinese postmenopausal osteoporotic women with a high risk of fracture.

Methods: In this multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase 3 trial, 448 postmenopausal women aged 50-85 years with osteoporosis were enrolled at 49 centers in China and were randomly assigned (3:1) to receive 60 mg of the denosumab biosimilar (LY06006) or placebo subcutaneously every 6 months for 1 year. Lumbar spine bone mineral density (BMD) change was the primary endpoint.

The YSZ-based mixed-potential sensor has exhibited promising application prospects for in situ carbon monoxide (CO) monitoring owing to its excellent thermal stability. However, the way to further enhance the sensitivity and selectivity of the sensor remains challenging due to the limitation of the sensing material. In the present work, we proposed a strategy of introducing moderate oxygen vacancies in the transition metal oxide sensing material to enhance CO sensing performance.

Background: Bariatric surgery is an effective therapy for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and obesity. Euglycaemic ketoacidosis (EKA) has been reported in patients taking sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors after bariatric surgery. Cases of T2DM complicated with EKA without SGLT2 inhibitors after bariatric surgery are rarely reported.

Radiation enteritis is the most common and serious complication of abdominal or pelvic radiation therapy. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), as well as cell protection agents, inhibit apoptosis and promote the proliferation of injured tissues. 3 human umbilical cords MSCs (UCMSCs) were injected into the tail vein or peritoneal cavity of a rat model of radiation enteritis.

Objective: Maturity-onset diabetes of the young caused by hepatocyte nuclear factor-1 alpha () variants (-MODY) is a common form of monogenetic diabetes. Although patients with -MODY might specifically benefit from sulfonylurea treatment, available methods for screening this specific type of diabetes are not cost-effective. This study was designed to establish an optimized clinical strategy based on multiple biomarkers to distinguish patients with -MODY from clinically diagnosed early-onset type 2 diabetes (EOD) for genetic testing in a Chinese population.
