Aims: Brain injury occupies the predominant cause of neurological dysfunction and mortality after successful cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) from cardiac arrest (CA). This study investigates the role and mechanism of Sirtuin 6 (SIRT6) in post-cardiac arrest brain injury in rats.

Methods: All rats were subjected to asphyxial CA followed by CPR.

The subcellular distribution of cargoes plays a crucial role in determining cell fate and therapeutic efficacy. However, achieving the precise delivery of therapeutics to specific intracellular targets remains a significant challenge. Here, we present a trimodular and acid/enzyme-gated nanoplatform (TAEN) that undergoes disassembly within acidic endosomes and then is cleaved by lysosomal cathepsin B to facilitate efficient and targeted transport of released cargoes into mitochondria compartments.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates drug resistance trends in tuberculosis patients in Yuexiu District, Guangzhou City, over a nine-year period from 2013 to 2022 to inform better prevention and control strategies.
  • Out of 5,191 active tuberculosis patients analyzed, 1,659 Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains were cultured, resulting in 438 cases of drug resistance.
  • The overall drug resistance rate was 26.40%, with significant findings including 15.37% monoresistance, 7.29% polyresistance, and 3.74% multidrug resistance, with the highest resistance observed to streptomycin and isoniazid.

Electroreduction of carbon dioxide (CORR) using renewable energy offers a sustainable approach for generating valuable chemicals. In this study, a three-chamber electrolyzer was utilized for the direct coproduction of CO, Cl, and NaOH from CO and NaCl electrolysis, contributing to net CO consumption and supporting industries like phosgene synthesis. To improve the electrolyzer performance, a Ga-based metal composite catalyst (GaInAg/Cu) was developed.

Vegetation serves as a crucial indicator of ecological environment and plays a vital role in preserving ecosystem stability. However, as urbanization escalates rapidly, natural vegetation landscapes are undergoing continuous transformation. Paradoxically, vegetation is pivotal in mitigating the ecological and environmental challenges posed by urban sprawl.

Tumour detection with high selectivity and sensitivity is crucial for delineating tumour margins and identifying metastatic foci during image-guided surgery. Optical nanoprobes with preferential tumour accumulation is often limited by inefficient amplification of biological signals. Here, we report the design of a library of hydrophobic core-tunable ultra-pH-sensitive nanoprobes (HUNPs) for orthogonally amplifying tumour microenvironmental signals on multiple tumour models.

Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is a predominant cause of mortality, and the prompt and precise identification of this condition is crucial to minimize its impact. Recent research indicates that gut microbiota is associated with the onset, progression, and treatment of ACS. To investigate its role, we sequenced the gut microbiota of 38 ACS patients before and after percutaneous coronary intervention and statin therapy at three time points, examining differential species and metabolic pathways.

  • The study examines the rising prevalence of isolated systolic hypertension (ISH) among individuals over 80 years old in Chengdu, China, highlighting that it has doubled in recent years.
  • Out of 1,312 older participants, 53% were found to have ISH, with a notable increase in prevalence correlating with age, especially among men.
  • Key factors associated with ISH include alcohol consumption, being overweight, and a higher heart rate, with these trends being particularly significant in male participants.

  • The study assessed how common abdominal obesity is among urban adults aged 35 to 79 in southwest China, finding a prevalence of 30.7%.
  • It used data from nearly 11,000 participants across Chengdu and Chongqing, gathering information through questionnaires and physical measurements.
  • Key factors linked to higher rates of abdominal obesity included age, sex, marriage status, alcohol use, hypertension, and diabetes, while higher education, smoking, and physical activity were associated with lower rates.

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a significant global health emergency caused by (Mtb). The epidemiology, transmission, genotypes, mutational patterns, and clinical consequences of TB have been extensively studied worldwide, however, there is a lack of information regarding the epidemiology and mutational patterns of Mtb in Pakistan, specifically concerning the prevalence of multi-drug resistant TB (MDR-TB).

Methods: This study aimed to investigate the incidence of Mtb and associated mutational patterns using the line probe assay (LPA).

Fluoroquinolones (FQs) play a key role in the treatment regimens against tuberculosis and non-tuberculous mycobacterial infections. However, there are significant differences in the sensitivities of different mycobacteria to FQs. In this study, we proved that this is associated with the polymorphism at amino acid 17 of quinolone resistance-determining region of Gyrase A by gene editing.

Article Synopsis
  • Tuberculosis (TB) remains a significant global health issue, with a study in China investigating the occurrence of concurrent pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) and extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB).
  • The research analyzed data from nearly 439,000 TB patients over several years and identified PTB as the most common diagnosis, with over 29% of cases showing concurrent PTB and EPTB, particularly tuberculous pleurisy.
  • Results indicated variations in associations of concurrent PTB-EPTB by gender and age, highlighting the importance for clinicians to screen for these cases to enhance patient treatment outcomes.

Expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) is promising in biomedical fields such as covered stents and plastic surgery owing to its excellent biocompatibility and mechanical properties. However, ePTFE material prepared by the traditional biaxial stretching process is with thicker middle and thinner sides due to the bowing effect, which poses a major problem in industrial-scale fabrication. To solve this problem, we design an olive-shaped winding roller to provide the middle part of the ePTFE tape with a greater longitudinal stretching amplitude than the two sides, so as to make up for the excessive longitudinal retraction tendency of the middle part when it is transversely stretched.

Background: Neonatal epileptic seizures cause postictal dysregulation of cerebral blood flow. Hydrogen sulfide (HS), a mediator with vasodilator and antioxidant properties, is produced in the brain by astrocyte cystathionine β-synthase (CBS). This study investigated whether HS improves the cerebral vascular outcome of seizures.
