Massive Dirac fermions, which are essential for realizing novel topological phenomena, are expected to be generated from massless Dirac fermions by breaking the related symmetry, such as time-reversal symmetry in topological insulators or crystal symmetry in topological crystalline insulators. Here, we report scanning tunneling microscopy and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy studies of α-Bi_{4}I_{4}, which reveals the realization of massive Dirac fermions in the (100) surface states without breaking the time-reversal symmetry. Combined with first-principles calculations, our experimental results indicate that the spontaneous symmetry breaking engenders two nondegenerate edge states at the opposite sides of monolayer Bi_{4}I_{4} after the structural phase transition, imparting mass to the Dirac fermions after taking the interlayer coupling into account.

Using coupled 2D square lattices with edge disorder as an example, we show that, the electron probability and wavepacket spreading width exhibit periodic oscillations and damped oscillations, respectively, before and after the wavepacket reaches the boundary. Furthermore, these electron oscillations exhibit strong resistance against disorder perturbation with a longer decay time in the regime of large disorder, due to the combined influences of ordered and disordered site energies in the central and edge regions.

The rapid industrial development has contributed to worsening global pollution, necessitating the urgent development of highly sensitive, cost-effective, and portable gas sensors. In this work, the adsorption of CO, CO, HS, NH, NO, NO, O, and SO gas molecules on pristine and Cu- and Al-decorated monolayer TiSe has been investigated based on first-principles calculations. First, the results of the phonon spectrum and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations demonstrated that TiSe is dynamically stable.

Nowadays, studies on black phosphorus nanosheets in electrocatalysis have received much attention and the successful preparation of metal nanoparticle/black phosphorus (BP) hybrid electrocatalysts indicates BP nanosheets can serve as a potential support platform for SACs. Herein, by using large-scale ab initio calculations, we explored a large composition space of SACs with transition metal atoms supported on BP monolayer (M-BP) and built a comprehensive picture of activity trend, stability, and electronic origin towards oxygen reduction and evolution reaction (ORR and OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER).

To provide a desirable number of parallel subnetworks as required to reach a robust inference in an active modulation diffractive deep neural network, a random micro-phase-shift dropvolume that involves five-layer statistically independent dropconnect arrays is monolithically embedded into the unitary backpropagation, which does not require any mathematical derivations with respect to the multilayer arbitrary phase-only modulation masks, even maintaining the nonlinear nested characteristic of neural networks, and generating an opportunity to realize a structured-phase encoding within the dropvolume. Further, a drop-block strategy is introduced into the structured-phase patterns designed to flexibly configure a credible macro-micro phase dropvolume allowing for convergence. Concretely, macro-phase dropconnects concerning fringe griddles that encapsulate sparse micro-phase are implemented.

Two-dimensional materials (2DMs) that are stacked vertically with a certain twist angle provide new degrees of freedom for designing novel physical properties. Twist-related properties of homogeneous bilayer and heterogeneous bilayer 2DMs, such as excitons and phonons, have been described in many pioneering works. However, twist-related properties of homogeneous trilayer 2DMs have been rarely reported.
