Background: Despite evidence regarding prevalence and correlates of cannabis use (CU) and cannabis use disorder (CUD) in major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD) in adults, little is known about this topic among adolescents.

Methods: Data are from the 2001-2004 National Comorbidity Survey-Adolescent Supplement, an in-person, cross-sectional epidemiologic survey of mental disorders. Participants included adolescents, ages 13-18 years, with MDD (n = 354 with CU, n = 70 with CUD, n = 688 with no CU), BD (n = 79 with CU, n = 32 with CUD, n = 184 with no CU), or adolescents without mood disorders (n = 1413 with CU, n = 333 with CUD, n = 6970 with no CU).

Background: Acute lower extremity deep venous thrombosis (LEDVT) is a common vascular emergency with significant morbidity risks, including post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS) and pulmonary embolism. Traditional treatments like catheter-directed thrombolysis (CDT) often result in variable success rates and complications.

Aim: To investigate the therapeutic efficacy of percutaneous mechanical thrombus removal in acute LEDVT.

The pathogenesis of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) remains unclear. It has been found that interleukin-6 (IL-6) rs1800795 locus and matrix metalloproteinase-3 (MMP-3) rs3025058 locus gene polymorphisms may be associated with AIS susceptibility, which has been controversial and needs to be further confirmed by updated meta-analysis. The aim of the present study was to investigate the association of MMP-3 rs3025058 and IL-6 rs1800795 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with susceptibility to AIS.

Article Synopsis
  • The study highlights the importance of using AI to predict ischemic and bleeding events after drug-eluting stent implantation, responding to evolving guidelines in dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) management.
  • Researchers developed and validated an AI-based model, the AI-DAPT, using extensive patient data, which was evaluated against multiple algorithms to forecast risks over a 36-month period after stent implantation.
  • The AI-DAPT model achieved high accuracy in predicting both ischemic (90%) and bleeding (84%) risks, offering a dynamic and personalized tool for optimizing DAPT management.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate how different target area delineation methods in intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) affect treatment outcomes for patients with locally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC).
  • A total of 88 NPC patients were divided into two groups—control and observation—based on MRI and CT, with the observation group using a more detailed targeting plan that theoretically enhanced treatment efficacy.
  • Results indicated that the observation group experienced higher treatment effectiveness and fewer side effects, with certain blood markers showing significant predictive value for the effectiveness of the radiotherapy.

Background: Mood and anxiety are widely associated with physical conditions, but research and treatment are complicated by their overlap, clinical heterogeneity, and manifestation on a spectrum rather than as discrete disorders. In contrast to previous work relying on threshold-level disorders, we examined the association between empirically-derived profiles of mood and anxiety syndromes with physical conditions in a nationally-representative sample of US adolescents.

Methods: Participants were 2,911 adolescents (aged 13-18) from the National Comorbidity Survey-Adolescent Supplement who provided information on physical conditions and reported at least one lifetime mood-anxiety 'syndrome' based on direct interviews with the Composite International Diagnostic Interview Version 3.

Background: Breast cancer (BC) incidence and mortality are lower in Poland than in the United States (US). However, Polish-born migrant women to US approach the higher BC mortality rates of US women. We evaluated the association between consumption of cabbage/sauerkraut foods and BC risk in Polish-born migrants to US.

The objective of this study is to examine the association between headache and mental disorders in a nationally representative sample of American youth. We used the National Comorbidity Survey-Adolescent Supplement to assess sex-specific prevalence of lifetime migraine and non-migraine headache using modified International Headache Society criteria and examine associations between headache subtypes and DSM-IV mental disorders. Adolescent report (n = 10,123) was used to identify headache subtypes and anxiety, mood, eating, and substance use disorders.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to explore the links between social capital and various mental health issues in adolescents, including lifetime mental disorders, severity of functional impairment, and the presence of multiple disorders.
  • - Using data from a national survey involving 6,483 U.S. adolescents, the research identified key social factors like supportive friendships, family cohesion, and school bonding that correlated with lower odds of mental disorders.
  • - While causality can't be established, the results suggest enhancing social connections—especially friendships—could help improve mental health outcomes for adolescents.

Background/aims: Patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in referral practice commonly report mental disorders and functional impairment. Our aim was to determine the prevalence of mental, physical and sleep-related comorbidities in a nationally representative sample of IBS patients and their impact on functional impairment.

Methods: IBS was defined by modified Rome Criteria based on responses to the chronic conditions section of the National Comorbidity Survey-Replication.

We have developed a copper-mediated one-pot synthesis of 2,3,5-trisubstituted pyrroles from 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds and acrylates using ammonium acetate as a nitrogen source. The reaction achieves C-C and C-N bond formation and provides an efficient approach to access highly functionalized pyrroles without further raw material preparation. This method is operationally simple, compatible with a wide range of functional groups, and provides the target products in moderate to good yields.

Article Synopsis
  • A meta-analysis was conducted to clarify conflicting results from previous studies about the impact of protein intake on Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC).
  • The analysis reviewed data from nine studies for UC and five for CD, using databases like PubMed and CNKI to assess the risks related to protein consumption.
  • Ultimately, the findings revealed no significant association between protein intake and the risk of developing either UC or CD.

Nuclear receptor Nur77 participates in multiple metabolic regulations and plays paradoxical roles in tumorigeneses. Herein, we demonstrated that the knockout of Nur77 stimulated mammary tumor development in two mouse models, which would be reversed by a specific reexpression of Nur77 in mammary tissues. Mechanistically, Nur77 interacted and recruited corepressors, the SWI/SNF complex, to the promoters of and to suppress their transcriptions, which hampered the fatty acid uptake, leading to the inhibition of cell proliferation.

Inter-individual differences in T helper (Th) cell responses affect susceptibility to infectious, allergic and autoimmune diseases. To identify factors contributing to these response differences, here we analyze in vitro differentiated Th1 cells from 16 inbred mouse strains. Haplotype-based computational genetic analysis indicates that the p53 family protein, p73, affects Th1 differentiation.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated how common excessive sleepiness (Ex.S) and related symptoms are in U.S. adults, analyzing demographic factors, comorbidities, and the impact on daily functioning using data from the National Comorbidity Survey.
  • Among the participants, approximately 23.34% experienced Ex.S, which was notably linked to insomnia symptoms, particularly among younger women, those with lower income, and the unemployed.
  • Individuals with Ex.S were also significantly more likely to have mental disorders, chronic health conditions, and experience higher levels of disability.

Article Synopsis
  • A study of 6,483 US adolescents found that 41.5% experienced daytime sleepiness, with 11.7% meeting the criteria for hypersomnolence, particularly prevalent in girls and varying by age.
  • Hypersomnolence was linked to shorter sleep duration and delayed bedtimes, as well as to insomnia and other mental disorders, indicating that sleep issues may coexist or affect each other.
  • The findings highlight that even those getting enough sleep can experience hypersomnolence, pointing to the need for more research on how sleep disorders relate to mental health in adolescents.
