Genome-wide association studies have identified susceptibility loci for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). We conducted a meta-analysis of all single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that showed nominally significant P-values in two previously published genome-wide scans that included a total of 2961 ESCC cases and 3400 controls. The meta-analysis revealed five SNPs at 2q33 with P< 5 × 10(-8), and the strongest signal was rs13016963, with a combined odds ratio (95% confidence interval) of 1.

Article Synopsis
  • A genome-wide association study was conducted on esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) involving 1,077 ESCC patients and 1,733 control subjects, focusing on the Chinese Han population.
  • The study successfully replicated findings in larger cohorts, identifying two new genetic risk factors for ESCC: PLCE1 and C20orf54, with strong statistical significance.
  • PLCE1 is linked to essential cellular functions like growth and apoptosis, while C20orf54 is involved in riboflavin transport, highlighting their potential roles in ESCC and gastric cardia adenocarcinoma (GCA) risk.

A method for the determination and confirmation of amitraz and its degradation product 2,4-dimethylaniline (2,4-DMA) in honey is reported. Determination of the two compounds was based on HPLC with UV detection and MS/MS (LC-MS/MS) after a liquid-liquid extraction with hexane and isopropyl alcohol. Chromatographic separation was achieved by using a C18 column with a gradient mobile phase consisting of 0.

Semiconductor CdX (X=Te, Se, S) hollow structures have been successfully prepared by using Cd(OH)Cl precursors as a sacrificial template. The hollow structures can be hollow spheres or tubes by controlling the shape of the sacrificial template. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive spectrometry.

Electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) of CdS nanotubes in aqueous solution and its sensing application were studied by entrapping the CdS nanotubes in carbon paste electrode. Two ECL peaks were observed at -0.9V (ECL-1) and -1.

A convenient sonochemical route was developed to fabricate one-dimensional (1D) CdS or CdSe assemblies via a simple template method with two-steps: Firstly, the colloid one dimensional cadmium hydroxide particles were prepared as templates under sonication; then, the colloid particles were converted into 1D CdS or CdSe assemblies via a replacement reaction after the surface nucleation and crystal growth processes. The as-prepared CdS and CdSe nanowires were characterized by XRD, TEM, XPS, and UV-visible Spectroscopy. The effects of the ultrasonic irradiation were discussed.

A facile and efficient approach for the fabrication of mesoporous spherical aggregates of anatase nanocrystals is reported in this paper. Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide was used as the structure-directing agent, and the interaction between cyclohexane microdroplets and the cetyltrimethylammonium bromide self-assemblies led to the assembly of 4-5-nm-sized anatase nanocrystals into spherical aggregates with mesoporous structures. The as-prepared anatase powders exhibited high photocatalytic activity and could be effectively used as the catalyst for the room-temperature photodegradation of a variety of organic dye pollutants in aqueous media including methyl orange, bromopyrogallol red, and methylene blue.
