The sluggish anodic hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) of the hydroxide exchange membrane fuel cell (HEMFC) is a significant barrier for practical implementation. Herein, we designed a catalyst of MoTiCT MXene-supported Ru-CuO heterojunctions (named as Ru-CuO/MXene). The XPS spectra and the d-band center data of the different amounts of Cu of the Ru-CuO/MXene suggested that there existed a strongly electronic metal-support interaction between the active species and the substrate with MXene as the excellent carrier.

The electrochemical NH synthesis on TiNO is proposed to follow the Mars-van Krevelen (MvK) mechanism, offering more favorable N adsorption and activation on the N vacancy (Nv) site, compared to the conventional associative mechanism. The regeneration cycle of Nv represents the rate-determining step in this process. This study investigates a series of TM (Fe, Co, Ni, Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir, and Pt)-TiNO to explore the *H migration (from TM to TiNO)-promoted Nv cycle.

This paper realizes infrared image denoising, recognition, and semantic segmentation for complex electrical equipment and proposes a thermal fault diagnosis method that incorporates temperature differences. We introduce a deformable convolution module into the Denoising Convolutional Neural Network (DeDn-CNN) and propose an image denoising algorithm based on this improved network. By replacing Gaussian wrap-around filtering with anisotropic diffusion filtering, we suggest an image enhancement algorithm that employs Weighted Guided Filtering (WGF) with an enhanced Single-Scale Retinex (Ani-SSR) technique to prevent strong edge halos.

The Volmer step in alkaline hydrogen evolution reactions (HERs), which supplies H* to the following steps by cleaving H-O-H bonds, is considered the rate-determining step of the overall reaction. The Volmer step involves water dissociation and adsorbed hydroxyl (*OH) desorption; Ru-based catalysts display a compelling water dissociation process in an alkaline HER. Unfortunately, the strong affinity of Ru for *OH blocks the active sites, resulting in unsatisfactory performance during HER processes.

Electrocatalysis has emerged as one of the most promising alternatives to conventional anthraquinone for preparing hydrogen peroxide (HO) with high energy consumption and pollution because of its simplicity, convenience, and environmental friendliness. However, the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) generating HOviathe2e path is acompetitive path for 4eORR to generate HO. Therefore, it is crucial to identify an electrocatalyst with high selectivity and activity of 2eORR.

Regulating electron density at the active site by electronic directional transport from special channels is an effective strategy to accelerate the reaction rate in photocatalytic water splitting. Here, a novel two dimensional/two dimensional (2D/2D) BiOBr/TiC heterojunction with special interfacial charge transfer channel was fabricated successfully via in-situ growth of BiOBr on the surface of ultrathin TiC by using a convenient hydrolysis method. The electrostatic attraction between Bi cations and electronegative TiC ensures the construction of 2D/2D heterojunction and a strong intimate interface contact between TiC and BiOBr, which establishes an electronic transport channel, and shortens the charge transport distance, assuring excellent bulk-to-surface and interfacial charge transfer abilities.

Altered redox biology and oxidative stress have been implicated in the progression of heart failure. Glutaredoxin-2 (GRX2) is a glutathione-dependent oxidoreductase and catalyzes the reversible deglutathionylation of mitochondrial proteins. Sirtuin-3 (SIRT3) is a class III histone deacetylase and regulates lysine acetylation in mitochondria.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the role of sirtuin 3 (SIRT3) in regulating brown adipose tissue (BAT) and its connection to uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1), which is essential for thermogenesis in mammals.
  • Experiments involving wild-type and Sirt3KO mice revealed that the lack of SIRT3 impaired BAT's ability to utilize lipids and regulate body temperature, although it did not impact the expression of UCP1.
  • The results suggest that SIRT3 influences BAT thermogenesis indirectly by modulating the activity of mitochondrial proteins and metabolic pathways related to acylcarnitine and electron transport chain complexes, rather than directly affecting UCP1

Glutaredoxin 2 (GRX2), a mitochondrial glutathione-dependent oxidoreductase, is central to glutathione homeostasis and mitochondrial redox, which is crucial in highly metabolic tissues like the heart. Previous research showed that absence of Grx2, leads to impaired mitochondrial complex I function, hypertension and cardiac hypertrophy in mice but the impact on mitochondrial structure and function in intact cardiomyocytes and in humans has not been explored. We hypothesized that Grx2 controls cardiac mitochondrial dynamics and function in cellular and mouse models, and that low expression is associated with human cardiac dysfunction.

Glutaredoxin-2 (Grx2) modulates the activity of several mitochondrial proteins in cardiac tissue by catalyzing deglutathionylation reactions. However, it remains uncertain whether Grx2 is required to control mitochondrial ATP output in heart. Here, we report that Grx2 plays a vital role modulating mitochondrial energetics and heart physiology by mediating the deglutathionylation of mitochondrial proteins.

Article Synopsis
  • Glutathionylation plays a crucial role in regulating protein function when cells undergo changes in redox status, specifically affecting uncoupling protein-3 (UCP3) and its role in proton leak and reactive oxygen species production.
  • Recent research identifies glutaredoxin-2 (Grx2) as the enzyme responsible for glutathionylating and inhibiting UCP3, suggesting that this modification is enzymatically mediated rather than solely pharmacologically induced.
  • Experiments demonstrate that knocking out Grx2 leads to increased proton leak via UCP3 in skeletal muscle mitochondria, which can be reversed with diamide, highlighting Grx2's regulatory role in energy metabolism for the first time.

Reduced glutathione (GSH) is the major determinant of redox balance in mitochondria and as such is fundamental in the control of cellular bioenergetics. GSH is also the most important nonprotein antioxidant molecule in cells. Surprisingly, the effect of redox environment has never been examined in skeletal muscle and brown adipose tissue (BAT), two tissues that have exceptional dynamic range and that are relevant to the development of obesity and related diseases.

Oxidative stress in skeletal muscle is a hallmark of various pathophysiologic states that also feature increased reliance on long-chain fatty acid (LCFA) substrate, such as insulin resistance and exercise. However, little is known about the mechanistic basis of the LCFA-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) burden in intact mitochondria, and elucidation of this mechanistic basis was the goal of this study. Specific aims were to determine the extent to which LCFA catabolism is associated with ROS production and to gain mechanistic insights into the associated ROS production.
