Objective: To explore the efficacy and safety of Juan Bi Pill (JBP) in treatment of active rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

Methods: From February 2017 to May 2018, 115 participants from 4 centers were randomly divided into JBP group (57 cases) and placebo group (58 cases) in a 1:1 ratio using a random number table method. Participants received a dose of JBP (4 g, twice a day, orally) combined with methotrexate (MTX, 10 mg per week) or placebo (4 g, twice a day, orally) combined with MTX for 12 weeks.

Hydrogen sulfide (HS), an endogenous, gaseous, signaling transmitter, has been shown to have vasodilative, anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, and cytoprotective activities. Increasing evidence also indicates that HS can suppress the production of inflammatory mediators by immune cells, for example, T cells and macrophages. Background: Zhibai Dihuang pill (ZBDH), a Chinese herbal formula, has been widely used as an adjunctive therapy to help reduce the patient's steroid dose and maintain low disease activity in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).

Objective: This systematic review evaluates the therapeutic effect of modified ZBDH in reducing steroid use in patients with SLE.

Search Strategy: A systematic literature search was carried out using seven databases, including PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chinese VIP Information and Wanfang Database, from their inception to June 1st, 2019.
