Meta-analysis of efficacy and safety of fast-track surgery in gastrectomy for gastric cancer.

Background: Fast-track surgery (FTS) is a promising program for surgical patients and has been applied to several surgical diseases. FTS is much superior to conventional perioperative care. Our aim was to evaluate and compare the safety and efficacy of FTS and conventional perioperative care for patients undergoing gastrectomy using a systematic review.

Neuroprotective effects of Asiaticoside.

In the central nervous system, Asiaticoside has been shown to attenuate in vitro neuronal damage caused by exposure to β-amyloid. In vivo studies demonstrated that Asiaticoside could attenuate neurobehavioral, neurochemical and histological changes in transient focal middle cerebral artery occlusion animals. In addition, Asiaticoside showed anxiolytic effects in acute and chronic stress animals.

MicroRNA-34a targets Bcl-2 and sensitizes human hepatocellular carcinoma cells to sorafenib treatment.

MiR-34a, a direct target of p53, has been shown to target several molecules associated with the cell cycle and cell survival pathways, and its dysregulation is implicated in cancer drug resistance or sensitivity in several human cancers. However, the correlation between miR-34a expression and chemoresistance has not been explored in HCC. In this study, we confirmed that miR-34a was significantly down-regulated in HCC tissues and HCC cell lines by qRT-PCR.

Elevated interleukin-8 enhances prefrontal synaptic transmission in mice with persistent inflammatory pain.

Background: Interleukin-8 (IL-8) is known for its roles in inflammation and plays critical roles in the development of pain. Its expression increases in the brain after peripheral inflammation. Prefrontal cortex, including the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), is a forebrain structure known for its roles in pain transmission and modulation.

Leukocyte telomere length predicts overall survival in hepatocellular carcinoma treated with transarterial chemoembolization.

Previous studies have reported that telomere length in peripheral blood leukocytes can predict the clinical outcome of several cancers. However, whether leukocyte telomere length is associated with the prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains to be determined. In this study, relative telomere length (RTL) in peripheral blood leukocytes was measured using a real-time PCR-based method for 269 HCC patients treated with transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) from two independent hospitals.

[Histochemical and ultrastructure study of bile cast in liver transplantation patients].

Objective: To investigate the histological components and solubility of the bile-cast, and to study the pathological course of bile cast formation.

Methods: HE staining, bilirubin staining (Gmelin reaction), Masson's staining, alcian blue staining and fibrin staining (weigert's) were performed on the formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded section of the bile cast. Ultrastructure was examined under the scanning electron microscope.

[Secretory expression of chimeric Fab antibody HAb18 against human hepatocellular carcinoma in Pichia pastoris].

Aim: To express secretively chimeric Fab antibody HAb18 (cFab) against human hepatocellular carcinoma in Pichia pastoris.

Methods: Genes encoding CL chain and Fd fragment of cFab antibody HAb18 were subcloned into vectors pPIC9K and pPICZalphaA, respectively. After confirmed by DNA sequence analysis, the recombinant plasmids pPIC9K/CL and pPICZalphaA/Fd were transformed into the genome of Pichia pastoris GS115.

[Expression and purification of rat betacellulin with biological activity].

Aim: To obtain recombinant rat betacellulin with biological activity.

Methods: A 534 bp of rat betacellulin gene fragment was amplified by RT-PCR from rat kidney and cloned into pET28a(+) vector to construct recombinant plasmid pET28a-rBTC. The recombinant plasmid was transformed into E.
