The study aimed to assess the prevalence of various disabilities (vision, mental, language, psychiatric, extremity, and hearing) in children aged 0 to 7 years in Shenzhen, involving a sample of 77,727 children.
Results showed an overall disability prevalence of 5.59 per thousand, with mental and language disabilities being the most common, while vision disabilities were the least common, with a noted increase in prevalence with age.
The findings indicated that while the overall prevalence of disabilities in Shenzhen is lower compared to national rates from 1989, it is still significantly higher than similar studies conducted in Japan, warranting further investigation into possible causes.
