Branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) including leucine, isoleucine and valine have been linked with metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. BCAAs homeostasis is tightly controlled by their catabolic pathway. BCKA dehydrogenase (BCKD) complex is the rate-limiting step for BCAA catabolism.

Parallel to major changes in fatty acid and glucose metabolism, defect in branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) catabolism has also been recognized as a metabolic hallmark and potential therapeutic target for heart failure. However, BCAA catabolic enzymes are ubiquitously expressed in all cell types and a systemic BCAA catabolic defect is also manifested in metabolic disorder associated with obesity and diabetes. Therefore, it remains to be determined the cell-autonomous impact of BCAA catabolic defect in cardiomyocytes in intact hearts independent from its potential global effects.

X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (X-ALD) is an inherited disease caused by a mutation in the adenosine 5'-triphosphate binding cassette subfamily D member 1 (ABCD1) gene encoding a peroxisomal transmembrane protein, which has various clinical manifestations and a rapid progression from initial symptoms to fatal inflammatory demyelination. Therefore, identification of early clinical symptoms and further early diagnosis as well as treatment can effectively prevent disease development. In this study, we reported the laboratory and radiographic features in a rare case of X-ALD with 3-year skin hyperpigmentation as the only manifestation.

Huangqi Jianzhong Tang (HQJZT) is a traditional Chinese herbal formula consisting of seven different herbs: Radix Astragali, Radix Paeoniae Alba, Ramulus Cinnamomi, Fructus Jujubae, Glycyrrhizae Radix Et Rhizoma Praeparata Cum Melle, Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens, and Saccharum Granorum. The present study aims to evaluate the possible effects of HQJZT on cardiac function in acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and related mechanism. AMI model was established by ligation of the left anterior descending coronary artery followed by one-week HQJZT treatment.

The first catalytic asymmetric alkenylation of isatin imines is described. The reaction, which is promoted by a chiral bis(oxazoline)-copper complex, gives structurally diverse 3-alkenyl-3-aminooxindole derivatives in excellent yields, and with excellent diastereoselectivities and high-to-excellent enantioselectivities. The products can be readily converted to polycyclic indole derivatives without loss of enantioselectivity.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study focuses on heat shock transcription factors (Hsfs) in carnations, identifying 17 unique genes that help protect plants from abiotic stress.
  • - Detailed analyses revealed gene structure, phylogenetic relationships, and regulatory promoter elements related to stress and developmental processes.
  • - Experimental data showed that these genes are variably expressed across different tissues and flowering stages, with specific responses to stress conditions like heat and drought.

Fine particulate matter 2.5 (PM) induces free radicals and oxidative stress in animals, leading to a range of illnesses. In this study, Ganoderma Microsporum immunomodulatory (GMI) proteins were administered to alleviate PM-induced inflammatory responses in mother rats, and PM-induced inflammatory responses and neurological damage in their offspring.

Purpose: One third of patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) succumb to the disease partly due to rituximab resistance. Rituximab-induced calcium flux is an important inducer of apoptotic cell death, and we investigated the potential role of calcium channels in rituximab resistance.

Experimental Design: The distinctive expression of calcium channel members was compared between patients sensitive and resistant to rituximab, cyclophosphamide, vincristine, doxorubicin, prednisone (RCHOP) regimen.

Article Synopsis
  • Sera from rats treated with Tiaozhi granule were tested on human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) to evaluate their effects on autophagy.
  • The study involved incubating HUVECs with Tiaozhi granule sera, examining markers for autophagy using real-time PCR and western blot analyses, and visualizing autophagosomes.
  • Results indicated that Tiaozhi granule enhances autophagy under normal conditions but inhibits excessive autophagy when stimulated by rapamycin or angiotensin II, suggesting a regulation role in cell functions.

Article Synopsis
  • Three parvoviruses named RDPV-DP1, RDPV-DP2, and RDPV-DP3 were isolated from raccoon dogs suffering from severe enteritis, exhibiting high genetic similarity to canine parvovirus (CPV) strains.
  • These RDPVs demonstrated mutations in their VP2 protein that align them closely with original CPV-2 variants, indicating a potential evolution and adaptation to their hosts.
  • Phylogenetic analysis showed that these new RDPVs are grouped closely with specific CPV isolates from raccoon dogs and foxes, suggesting they are virulent and continuously evolving within their host species in China.

H9N2 influenza A virus (IAV) causes low pathogenic respiratory disease and infects a wide range of hosts. In this study, six IAVs were isolated from mink and identified as H9N2 IAV. Sequence analysis revealed that the six isolates continued to evolve, and their PB2 genes shared high nucleotide sequence identity with H7N9 IAV.

Background: To investigate the effects and involved mechanisms of the modified Yi Qi decoction (MYQ) in cardiac ischemia-reperfusion (IR) induced injury.

Methods: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to a 30-min coronary arterial occlusion followed by reperfusion, low or high dose decoction of MYQ was administrated orally for 1 week or 1 month.

Results: Both in 1 week and 1 month IR rat groups, cardiac function indexes were significantly impaired compared with sham group rats, accompanied with higher ratio of infarct size to risk size, decreased expressions of sodium calcium exchanger (NCX1) and sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca-ATPase (Serca2a), and different expressions of autophagic proteins, Beclin-1 and LC3.

Sera from the rats with different drug treatments (atorvastatin, Tiaozhi granule, or its extracts) were collected. LO-2 cells or HepG2 cells were pretreated with different sera as the following groups randomly: (1) blank control group, (2) positive control group (atorvastatin group), (3) Tiaozhi granule water extract groups, (4) Tiaozhi granule alcohol extract groups, and (5) alcohol extracts for each component: , L., and .

A laboratory experiment was performed to examine the impact of simulated acid rain (SAR) on nutrient leaching, microbial biomass, and microbial activities in a lateritic red soil in South China. The soil column leaching experiment was conducted over a 60-day period with the following six SAR pH treatments (levels): 2.5, 3.
