The advent of virtual reality (VR) in education offers unique possibilities for facilitating cooperative learning strategies, particularly in fields demanding intricate spatial understanding, such as gross anatomy. This study investigates the impact of integrating cooperative learning strategies within a VR-based gross anatomy curriculum, focusing on enhancing students' anatomy knowledge and skills. We analyzed the performance of two cohorts of first-year nursing students across five semesters (2016-2020), where traditional learning methods were used in the first three semesters (2016-2018), and a VR-based cooperative learning approach was adopted in the last two semesters (2019-2020).

Uremic toxins, such as indoxyl sulfate (IS) and kynurenine, accumulate in the blood in the event of kidney failure and contribute to further bone damage. To maintain the homeostasis of the skeletal system, bone remodeling is a persistent process of bone formation and bone resorption that depends on a dynamic balance of osteoblasts and osteoclasts. The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) is a ligand-activated transcription factor that regulates the toxic effects of uremic toxins.

The possible mechanisms underlying the quantitative and qualitative effects of cinacalcet on bone were explored in a chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder (CKD-MBD) mouse model in relation to the influence of the interactions among the osteoclast (OC) endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, autophagy and apoptosis pathways on OC differentiation. Body weight and biochemical parameters improved significantly in the CKD + cinacalcet groups compared to the CKD group. Micro-computed tomography (μCT) revealed both cortical and trabecular parameters deteriorated significantly in the CKD group and were reversed by cinacalcet in a dose-dependent manner.

Indoxyl sulfate (IS), a uremic toxin derived from dietary tryptophan metabolism by the gut microbiota, is an endogenous aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) agonist and a key player in bone remodeling. Resveratrol (RSV), an AhR antagonist, plays a protective role in shielding against AhR ligands. Our study explored the impact of IS on osteoblast differentiation and examined the possible mechanism of IS in controlling the expression of osteoblastogenesis markers through an in-depth investigation of AhR signaling.

Calcitonin is a small peptide hormone secreted from the parafollicular cells of the thyroid gland in response to an increase in serum calcium. The inhibition of osteoclastic resorption is the main mechanism by which calcitonin quickly decreases circulating calcium levels. Although calcitonin pharmacologically acts on osteoclasts to prevent bone resorption, the results of studies on genetically modified animals have shown that the physiological effect of calcitonin is in the inhibition of osteoblastic bone formation.

Indoxyl sulfate (IS) is a chronic kidney disease (CKD)-specific renal osteodystrophy metabolite that affects the nuclear factor of activated T-cells, cytoplasmic 1 (NFATc1), a transcription factor promoting osteoclastogenesis. However, the mechanisms underlying the regulation of NFATc1 by IS remain unknown. It is intriguing that the Aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) plays a key role in osteoclastogenesis, since IS is an endogenous AhR agonist.

Background: Norepinephrine transporter (NET), which regulates synaptic norepinephrine for noradrenergic signaling, is involved in the pathogenesis of anxiety, while expression of the NET gene differs at different ages. Here, we examine whether genetic variants in the NET gene are associated, in an age-specific manner, with increased risk of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), one of the most disabling anxiety disorders.

Methods: Three common single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the promoter (rs168924: A/G; rs2242446: T/C) and 5'-untranslated region (5'-UTR) (rs2397771: G/C) of the NET gene were genotyped in 2,317 Han-Chinese participants (791 GAD patients and 1,526 controls; age: 20-65).

Background: Neuroticism personality trait is recognized as an important endophenotypic predictor of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Furthermore, endophenotype-based pathway approaches have recently been shown to have greater advantages for gene-finding strategies than traditional case-control studies. In the present study, in addition to conventional case-control methods, we used pathway analyses to test whether the tri-allelic serotonin transporter promoter polymorphism (combining 5-HTTLPR and rs25531) is associated with risk of GAD through its effects on trait neuroticism.

Background: Despite the availability of current therapies, including oral antidiabetic drugs and insulin, for controlling the symptoms caused by high blood glucose, it is difficult to cure diabetes mellitus, especially type 1 diabetes mellitus.

Aim: Cell therapies using mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) may be a promising option. However, the therapeutic mechanisms by which MSCs exert their effects, such as whether they can differentiate into insulin-producing cells (IPCs) before transplantation, are uncertain.

The valine⁶⁶methionine (Val⁶⁶Met) polymorphism (6265) of the brain-derived neurotrophic factor gene has been shown to influence autonomic arousal pathways, which in turn predict elevated syndromal anxiety in healthy humans. We examined whether the variant is associated with an increased risk of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), one of the most prevalent anxiety disorders, through altering parasympathetic stress/relaxation reactivity. A total of 2,250 Han Chinese adults (750 GAD patients and 1,500 healthy controls) were included in the genotyping.

Renal osteodystrophy (ROD) represents bone disorders related to chronic kidney disease (CKD) and several bone biomarkers are used clinically to predict ROD in CKD and hemodialysis (HD) patients. Serum albumin associates with inflammation other than nutritional status in these patients. Chronic inflammation is proved to relate with bone loss, however, the influence of hypoalbuminemia on bone biomarkers is still unclear.

Secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) relates to high turnover bone loss and is responsible for most bone fractures among chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. Changes in the Wingless/beta-catenin signaling (Wnt/β-catenin) pathway and Wnt inhibitors have been found to play a critical role in CKD related bone loss. A calcimimetic agent, cinacalcet, is widely used for SHPT and found to be similarly effective for parathyroidectomy clinically.

The functional ValMet polymorphism (rs4680) of the Catechol-O-Methyltransferase (COMT) gene has been implicated in generalized anxiety disorder (GAD); however, the underlying neural mechanisms remain unexamined. Recent evidence reveals that low resting parasympathetic (vagal) control is an endophenotypic predictor of anxiety, while the effect of COMT rs4680 differs at different ages. Thus, we examined whether the COMT ValMet variant could increase the risk of GAD through decreased resting parasympathetic nervous control in an age-specific manner.

In chronic kidney disease (CKD), hyperphosphatemia induces fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF-23) expression that disturbs renal 1,25-dihydroxy vitamin D (1,25D) synthesis; thereby increasing parathyroid hormone (PTH) production. FGF-23 acts on the parathyroid gland (PTG) to increase 1α-hydroxylase activity and results in increase intra-gland 1,25D production that attenuates PTH secretion efficiently if sufficient 25D are available. Interesting, calcimimetics can further increase PTG 1α-hydroxylase activity that emphasizes the demand for nutritional vitamin D (NVD) under high PTH status.

Chronic kidney disease-mineral bone disorders (CKD-MBD) exhibit abnormalities in the circulating mineral levels, vitamin D metabolism, and parathyroid function that contribute to the formation of a bone lesion. The uremic toxin, indoxyl sulfate (IS), accumulates in the blood in cases of renal failure and leads to bone loss. The bone and renal responses to the action of the parathyroid hormone (PTH) are progressively decreased in CKD in spite of increasing PTH levels, a condition commonly called PTH resistance.
