Our initial studies detected elevated levels of 3,4-dihydroxyphenyllactic acid (DHPLA) in urine samples of patients with severe heart disease when compared with healthy subjects. Given the reported anti-inflammatory properties of DHPLA and related dihydroxylated phenolic acids (DPAs), we embarked on an exploratory multi-centre investigation in patients with no urinary tract infections to establish the possible pathophysiological significance and therapeutic implications of these findings. Chinese and Caucasian patients being treated for severe heart disease or those conditions associated with inflammation (WBC ≥ 10 ×10/L or hsCRP ≥ 3.

Yiqi formula (YF), a traditional herbal prescription, has long been used to treat triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) patients. The present study aims to investigate the effects and the related mechanism of YF for treatment of TNBC xenografts. MDA-MB-231 (human TNBC) cells were subcutaneously injected into the second mammary fat pad of 40 female nude mice, which were divided into four groups: control, erlotinib (an epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitor), YF, and combination (YF plus erlotinib).

Objective: To determine the bufalin concentration in rats' plasma by establishing a high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) method, and to evaluate and compare the pharmacokinetic characteristics of bufalin-loaded bovine serum albumin nanoparticles (bufalin-BSA-NP) and bufalin.

Methods: Thirty Wistar rats were randomly divided into six groups with five rats in each group, and administered with a single dose of 0.6, 0.

Titanate nanofibers containing silver have been demonstrated through the experiments reported herein to have effective antifungal and antiproliferative activities in the presence of UV light. The titanate nanofibers containing silver can be fabricated by means of ion exchange followed by a topochemical process in an environment suitable for reductive reactions. Excellent antibacterial, antifungal, and antiproliferative activities could be demonstrated by both Ag₂Ti₅O₁₁ · xH₂O and Ag/titanate (UV light irradiation) due to their unique structures and compositions, which have photocatalytic activities to generate reactive oxygen species and capabilities to continuously release the silver ions.

Two novel flavonoids, kaempferol 3- O- α-L-rhamnopyranosyl (1-3) (2,4-di- O-acetyl-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl) (1-6) β-D-galactopyranoside (1) and kaempferol 3- O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl (1-3) (4-O-acetyl-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl) (1-6) β-D-galactopyranoside (2), along with three known ones, kaempferol-3- O-β-D-galactopyranoside (3), kaempferol (4), and 7-hydroxychromone (5), have been isolated from the leaves of Actinidia valvata Dunn, and their structures were elucidated based on spectroscopic methods. Compounds 1-3 exhibited dose-dependent activity in scavenging 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radicals, superoxide anion radicals, and hydroxyl radicals, and inhibited lipid peroxidation of mouse liver homogenate IN VITRO.
