The Impact of Student-led Community Health Screenings on Clients' Health Knowledge and Outcomes: A Qualitative Study.

Objectives: This study investigated the impact of community health screenings (CHS) on the Asian community, focussing on the role of a student-led health and wellness centre in promoting and improving health outcomes. The CHS is a collaboration between Te Kotahi Oranga | Health and Wellness Centre and The Asian Network Incorporated, offering free health screenings to Asian migrants in the Waikato region, New Zealand.

Methods: Employing a qualitative approach, we interviewed clients who participated in the CHS to determine their perceptions regarding the effectiveness of the programme, its influence on their health knowledge and actions, and their overall satisfaction with the service.

A curious case of a negative control line on a dengue duo assay due to interference - A case report.

An elderly patient who presented with 1 week of fever and respiratory symptoms was tested for dengue infection with an Abbott Bioline™ Dengue Duo immunochromatographic assay. Unexpectedly, the control line of the dengue non-structural protein 1 (NS1) component was absent, necessitating result invalidation. It remained absent when the test was repeated on the SD Biosensor Standard™ Q Dengue Duo, but present on the Wells Bio careUS Dengue Combo and Asan Easy Test® Dengue DUO assays, suggesting potential interference.

Assessing Seed Germination Response of Parasitic Plant Striga hermonthica with Small-Molecule Probes.

Seed germination of a parasitic plant Striga hermonthica is elicited by strigolactones which are exuded from roots of host plants. Here, we describe a high-throughput germination assay and a method for visualizing in vivo strigolactone receptor functions with a fluorogenic probe.

Enhanced photocatalytic regeneration of carboxymethyl cellulose/lignin/ZnO complex hydrogel after methylene blue adsorption.

The biodegradable, nontoxic, and renewable carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) hydrogel has been developed into a green adsorbent. However, the weak chemical interaction limits its adsorption capability and reusability. This work incorporated lignin with complex structure and ZnO nanoparticles with photocatalytic properties into CMC hydrogel beads to improve the removal of methylene blue (MB) through chemical interaction.

We report on a female neonate with a clinico-radiological presentation in keeping with a lethal form of prenatal Caffey disease (PCH). She had antenatal and postnatal features of severely bowed long bones, small chest, diaphyseal hyperostosis and polyhydramnios and died shortly after birth. Initial testing excluded COL1A1-related PCH, as an OI gene panel, consisting of COL1A1, COL1A2, CRTAP, and P3H1 genes, was negative.

Gibberellins Promote Seed Conditioning by Up-Regulating Strigolactone Receptors in the Parasitic Plant Striga hermonthica.

Dormant seeds of the root parasitic plant Striga hermonthica sense strigolactones from host plants as environmental cues for germination. This process is mediated by a diversified member of the strigolactone receptors encoded by HYPOSENSITIVE TO LIGHT/KARRIKIN INSENSITIVE2 genes. It is known that warm and moist treatment during seed conditioning gradually makes dormant Striga seeds competent to respond to strigolactones, although the mechanism behind it is poorly understood.

Determining a common understanding of interprofessional competencies for pre-registration health professionals in Aotearoa New Zealand: A Delphi study.

There is growing awareness that factors such as the growing incidence of co-morbidity and increasing complexity of patient health needs cannot be addressed by health professionals practicing in isolation. Given this, there is an increasing emphasis on preparing students in health-related programs for effective interprofessional practice. Less clear, however, are the specific skills and clinical or learning opportunities necessary for students to develop effectiveness in interprofessional practice.

Carboxymethyl cellulose/sodium alginate beads incorporated with calcium carbonate nanoparticles and bentonite for phosphate recovery.

Although anionic polyelectrolyte hydrogel beads offer attractive adsorption of cationic dyes, phosphate adsorption is limited by electrostatic interactions. In this work, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)/sodium alginate (SA) hydrogel beads were modified with calcium carbonate (CaCO) and/or bentonite (Be). How Does Being Overweight Moderate Associations between Diet and Blood Pressure in Male Adolescents?

Diet is one of the strongest modifiable risk factors for hypertension. In this study, we described the associations between dietary factors and blood pressure; and explored how weight status moderated these associations in a sample of New Zealand male adolescents. We collected demographics information, anthropometric, blood pressure, and dietary data from 108 male adolescents (15-17 years old).

Predicting height from ulna length for the determination of weight status in New Zealand adolescents: A cross-sectional study.

Background: The measurement of height is crucial for weight status assessment. When standing height is difficult to measure, ulna length may offer a convenient and accurate surrogate of height measure. Adolescence is a period of accelerated linear growth; hence, the validation of age-specific equations that predict height from ulna length in adolescents is warranted.

Stability evaluation and formula optimization of cellulose-based scaffold for the air-liquid interface cultivation of Navicula incerta.

Culture scaffolds allow microalgae cultivation with minimum water requirement using the air-liquid interface approach. However, the stability of cellulose-based scaffolds in microalgae cultivation remains questionable. In this study, the stability of regenerated cellulose culture scaffolds was enhanced by adjusting TiO loading and casting gap.

Sustainable cultivation of Navicula incerta using cellulose-based scaffold incorporated with nanoparticles in air-liquid interface cultivation system.

Microalgae cultivation using open cultivation systems requires large area and it is susceptible to contamination as well as weather changes. Meanwhile, the closed systems require large capital investment, and they are susceptible to the build-up of dissolved oxygen. Air-liquid interface culture systems with low water-footprint, but high packing density can be used for microalgae cultivation if low-cost culture scaffolds are available.

Effect of newer anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs) on the cognitive status in pentylenetetrazol induced seizures in a zebrafish model.

Epilepsy is marked by seizures that are a manifestation of excessive brain activity and is symptomatically treatable by anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs). Unfortunately, the older AEDs have many side effects, with cognitive impairment being a major side effect that affects the daily lives of people with epilepsy. Thus, this study aimed to determine if newer AEDs (Zonisamide, Levetiracetam, Perampanel, Lamotrigine and Valproic Acid) also cause cognitive impairment, using a zebrafish model.

A Systematic Review on Non-mammalian Models in Epilepsy Research.

Epilepsy is a common neurological disorder characterized by seizures which result in distinctive neurobiological and behavioral impairments. Not much is known about the causes of epilepsy, making it difficult to devise an effective cure for epilepsy. Moreover, clinical studies involving epileptogenesis and ictogenesis cannot be conducted in humans due to ethical reasons.

Novel use of laparoscopic-guided TAP block in total laparoscopic hysterectomy.

Background: Transverse abdominis plane (TAP) block is a peripheral nerve block designed to anaesthetise the nerves supplying the anterolateral abdominal wall (T6 to L1). We introduced laparoscopic TAP block at Ninewells Hospital in 2014 and present a retrospective study assessing its efficacy. To our knowledge, there is limited study done on laparoscopic-guided TAP block whilst there are abundant literatures available on ultrasound-guided TAP block.
