Southern corn rust (SCR), caused by Puccinia polysora Underw (P. polysora), is a catastrophic disease affecting maize, leading to significant global yield losses. The disease manifests primarily as pustules on the upper surface of corn leaves, obscuring our understanding of its cellular heterogeneity, the maize's response to its infection and the underlying gene expression regulatory mechanisms.

Hydrogen-bonded assembly of multiple components into well-defined icosahedral capsules akin to virus capsids has been elusive. In parallel, constructing robust zeolitic-like cluster-based supramolecular frameworks (CSFs) without any coordination covalent bonding linkages remains challenging. Herein, we report a cluster-based pseudoicosahedral H-bonded capsule Cu, which is buckled by the self-organization of judiciously designed constituent copper clusters and anions.

Glass-Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) laminates are widely used in the automotive and marine industries such as auto bodies and boat hulls. Decreasing the weight and improving the reparability of GFRP parts will cut down material usage, fuel consumption and repair costs. This study shows a bio-inspired helicoidal stacking configuration that significantly improves the impact performance and fiber damage resistance of GFRP laminates.

Metal engineering structures are commonly covered and protected by coatings. However, the early local corrosion under the coatings and at defects is difficult to detect and discover. Visibility to the naked eye means that corrosion has already developed and expanded.

The increasing incidence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) and extensively drug-resistant (XDR) Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) adds further urgency for rapid and multiplex molecular testing to identify the MTB complex and drug susceptibility directly from sputum for disease control. A nucleotide matrix-assisted-laser-desorption-ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS)-based assay was developed to identify MTB (MTBID panel) and 45 chromosomal mutations for resistance to eight antibiotics (MTBDR panel). We conducted a 300 case trial from outpatients to evaluate this platform.

Substitutional heterovalent doping represents an effective method to control the optical and electronic properties of nanocrystals (NCs). Highly monodisperse II-VI NCs with deep substitutional dopants are presented. The NCs exhibit stable, dominant, and strong dopant fluorescence, and control over n- and p-type electronic impurities is achieved.
