Identification of mechanism of the oncogenic role of FGFR1 in papillary thyroid carcinoma.

Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is the most prevalent malignancy of the thyroid. Fibroblast growth factor receptor 1 (FGFR1) is highly expressed in PTC and works as an oncogenic protein in this disease. In this report, we wanted to uncover a new mechanism that drives overexpression of FGFR1 in PTC.

Congenital absence of left atrial appendage in a patient with ischemic stroke and atrial fibrillation.

Left atrial appendage (LAA) is a finger-like muscular extension of the left atrium, and it is the most prominent site for cardiac thrombus in patients with atrial fibrillation. Congenital absence of LAA could be incidentally detected in patient with ischemic stroke and atrial fibrillation. Although it is considered to be an extremely rare cardiac anomaly, its clinical significance remains unknown and there is no clear consensus in the management strategy in those patients.

The expression of tachykinin receptors in the human lower esophageal sphincter.

Mammalian tachykinins are a family of neuropeptides which are potent modulators of smooth muscle function with a significant contractile effect on human smooth muscle preparations. Tachykinins act via three distinct G protein-coupled neurokinin (NK) receptors, NK1, NK2 and NK3, coded by the genes TACR1, TACR2 and TACR3 respectively. The purpose of this paper was to measure the mRNA and protein expression of these receptors and their isoforms in the clasp and sling fibers of the human lower esophageal sphincter complex and circular muscle from the adjacent distal esophagus and proximal stomach.

Assessment of muscle mass and its association with protein intake in a multi-ethnic Asian population: relevance in chronic kidney disease.

Background: Clinical practice guidelines recommend objective nutritional assessments in managing chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients but were developed while referencing to a North-American population. Specific recommendations for assessing muscle mass were suggested (mid-arm circumference, MAC; corrected mid-arm muscle area, cAMA; mid-arm muscle circumference, MAMC). This study aimed to assess correlation and association of these assessments with dietary protein intake in a multi-ethnic Asian population of healthy and CKD patients.

The photodegradation of nonylphenol under UV irradiation was investigated in an aqueous solution containing hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as the photochemically active substance was investigated. Influences of pH, the concentration of hydrogen peroxide, and the initial concentration of nonylphenol were studied. The following conditions were determined as optimal for nonylphenol removal: pH 1, H2O2 concentration of 40 mg/L, and an initial nonylphenol concentration of 15 of mg/L.

In vivo to in vitro effects of six bioactive lignans of Wuzhi tablet (Schisandra sphenanthera extract) on the CYP3A/P-glycoprotein-mediated absorption and metabolism of tacrolimus.

We recently reported that Wuzhi tablet (WZ; Schisandra sphenanthera extract) can inhibit P-glycoprotein (P-gp)-mediated efflux and CYP3A-mediated metabolism of tacrolimus (FK506) and thus increase the blood concentrations of FK506. Major active lignans of WZ include schisandrin A, schisandrin B, schisandrin C, schisandrol A, schisandrol B, and schisantherin A. Whether and how these six lignans affect the pharmacokinetics of FK506 remains unclear.

Plasma amino-terminal propeptide of procollagen type III is associated with subclinical left ventricular systolic dysfunction in aortic stenosis.

Objective: The aim of the study was to investigate the association of plasma amino-terminal propeptide of procollagen type III (PIIINP) with subclinical left ventricular (LV) systolic dysfunction in patients with aortic stenosis (AS) and normal LV ejection fraction.

Methods: The study was performed in 57 AS patients with normal LV ejection fraction and in 30 control subjects with normal aortic valve and normal LV ejection fraction. Tissue Doppler and speckle tracking image were performed to assess LV diastolic and systolic function.

Pulmonary valve endocarditis associated with a ruptured aneurysm of the right sinus of Valsalva.

Pulmonary valve endocarditis is an extremely rare complication of aneurysm of the sinus of Valsalva. We report the case of a 26-year-old male patient who presented with pulmonary valve endocarditis which was associated with a ruptured aneurysm of the right sinus of Valsalva with aorto-right ventricular outflow tract fistula and aortic valve endocarditis. He underwent aortic valve replacement with a 23 mm pericardial bioprosthesis, reconstruction of the right sinus of Valsalva using a pericardial patch, and debridement of pulmonary valve leaflet vegetations.

Reproductive strategy is a central feature of the ecology of invasive species as it determines the potential for population increase and range expansion. The red swamp crayfish, Procambarus clarkii, has invaded many countries and caused serious problems in freshwater ecosystems. However, little is known about the effects of environmental conditions on crayfish paternity and offspring traits in the wild.
