Left atrial appendage (LAA) is a finger-like muscular extension of the left atrium, and it is the most prominent site for cardiac thrombus in patients with atrial fibrillation. Congenital absence of LAA could be incidentally detected in patient with ischemic stroke and atrial fibrillation. Although it is considered to be an extremely rare cardiac anomaly, its clinical significance remains unknown and there is no clear consensus in the management strategy in those patients.

Photoinduced electron/energy transfer-reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (PET-RAFT) polymerization has become a powerful and eco-friendly toolkit to create well-defined macromolecular buildups while exhibiting composition, sequence and spatiotemporal control. Although PET-RAFT polymerization is generally much more convenient than living ionic polymerization, it is still a great challenge to regulate the polymerization upon multiple external stimuli and to simplify the procedures of post-polymerization purification. Mammalian tachykinins are a family of neuropeptides which are potent modulators of smooth muscle function with a significant contractile effect on human smooth muscle preparations. Tachykinins act via three distinct G protein-coupled neurokinin (NK) receptors, NK1, NK2 and NK3, coded by the genes TACR1, TACR2 and TACR3 respectively. The purpose of this paper was to measure the mRNA and protein expression of these receptors and their isoforms in the clasp and sling fibers of the human lower esophageal sphincter complex and circular muscle from the adjacent distal esophagus and proximal stomach.

The photodegradation of nonylphenol under UV irradiation was investigated in an aqueous solution containing hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as the photochemically active substance was investigated. Influences of pH, the concentration of hydrogen peroxide, and the initial concentration of nonylphenol were studied. The following conditions were determined as optimal for nonylphenol removal: pH 1, H2O2 concentration of 40 mg/L, and an initial nonylphenol concentration of 15 of mg/L.

We recently reported that Wuzhi tablet (WZ; Schisandra sphenanthera extract) can inhibit P-glycoprotein (P-gp)-mediated efflux and CYP3A-mediated metabolism of tacrolimus (FK506) and thus increase the blood concentrations of FK506. Major active lignans of WZ include schisandrin A, schisandrin B, schisandrin C, schisandrol A, schisandrol B, and schisantherin A. Whether and how these six lignans affect the pharmacokinetics of FK506 remains unclear.

Pulmonary valve endocarditis is an extremely rare complication of aneurysm of the sinus of Valsalva. We report the case of a 26-year-old male patient who presented with pulmonary valve endocarditis which was associated with a ruptured aneurysm of the right sinus of Valsalva with aorto-right ventricular outflow tract fistula and aortic valve endocarditis. He underwent aortic valve replacement with a 23 mm pericardial bioprosthesis, reconstruction of the right sinus of Valsalva using a pericardial patch, and debridement of pulmonary valve leaflet vegetations.
