Flavonoids are prevalent plant secondary metabolites with a broad range of biological activities. Their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer activities make flavonoids widely useful in a variety of industries, including the pharmaceutical and health food industries. However, many flavonoids occur at only low concentrations in plants, and they are difficult to synthesize chemically due to their structural complexity.

Aim: To examine the prevalence of second-victim distress among nurses and the association of second-victim distress, organizational support, and interprofessional collaboration with posttraumatic growth.

Background: Medical errors are unavoidable in healthcare; however, when acknowledged and shared, they offer healthcare professionals an opportunity to learn and grow. Second-victim distress arises from learning from mistakes but can be stressful for nurses, prompting some to leave the profession.

Article Synopsis
  • Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease where hyper-activated B cells produce autoantibodies, causing symptoms.
  • Research found that naïve mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) inhibit T cell activity but not B cell IgM production, leading to a study on how to enhance MSC function.
  • Treatment with ingenol-3-angelate (I3A) primes MSCs to inhibit B cells through the secretion of TGF-β1, showing improved effectiveness in alleviating SLE symptoms in mice.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common primary liver cancer, the incidence of which is rising globally. Despite recent advancements in immunotherapeutic and surgical treatment modalities, the prognosis for HCC remains poor. The surgical treatment strategy for HCC comprises a multimodal effort that ranges from ablative therapy and surgical resection to liver transplantation.

Background: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy, being a prevalent abdominal surgical procedure, has transitioned through various innovative stages aimed at reducing the procedure's invasiveness. These stages encompass Single-Incision Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy (SILC), Mini Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy (MLC), Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery (NOTES), and Robotic-Assisted Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy (RALC). The purpose of this review is to trace the evolution of minimally invasive cholecystectomy techniques, assess their status, and identify emerging trends and challenges in the field.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MASLD), a persistent liver condition associated with metabolic syndrome, is primarily caused by excessive fructose intake and a typical Western diet. Because there is currently only one approved treatment, lifestyle and dietary interventions are crucial. This study assessed the effects of dietary intervention involving freeze-dried plum (FDP), a natural source of antioxidants containing diverse polyphenols.

Reproductive timing in organisms can influence reproductive success and longevity, yet its long-term effects remain underexplored. This study monitored the first- and last-born offspring of Brachionus plicatilis across five generations to examine the impact of breeding timing on fertility and longevity. The last-born group produced more offspring in the F1 and F2 generations.

Purpose: Several studies have evaluated the impact of sarcopenic obesity (SO) on postoperative complications, including postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF), in patients undergoing pancreatoduodenectomy (PD). Previous studies have shown that SO increases POPF, but it remains unclear whether SO increases postoperative complications. In this study, we aimed to determine the relationship between SO and immediate postoperative complications.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the effects of inaudible Binaural Beats (BB) stimulation on visuospatial memory and brain activation in 17 participants primarily in their 20s.
  • Participants underwent a 5-minute rest, a task with or without BB stimulation, and another 5-minute rest, with their memory tested using a 3-back task.
  • Results showed that BB stimulation improved reaction times and increased blood flow in specific brain regions, highlighting its positive influence on memory performance.

Introduction: Assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs), such as intracytoplasmic sperm injection and embryo transfer, are essential for generating genetically edited monkeys. Despite their importance, ARTs face challenges in recipient selection in terms of time and the number of animals required. The potential of superovulated monkeys, commonly used as oocyte donors, to serve as surrogate mothers, remains underexplored.

We aimed to investigate the association between health-related behaviors and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) among Korean adults. A cross-sectional design using national open data was employed. Data from 8,096 adults aged 40 years and above who participated in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 2019 and 2021 were analyzed.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of Allium hookeri (AH) leaves cultivated with different light-emitting diode (LED) intensities (L: low, 100 μmol/m/s; M: medium, 150 μmol/m/s; H: high, 200 μmol/m/s). Alliin concentration increased as light intensity increased in AH and showed the highest level at LED-H condition. The anti-obesity and immunomodulatory properties of AH were evaluated in a cyclophosphamide (CPA)-induced immunosuppressed obese animal model.

Article Synopsis
  • Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is characterized by excessive fat accumulation in the liver and is often linked to unhealthy diets, particularly the overconsumption of soft drinks and Western diets.
  • The study explores the efficacy of hemp sprout-derived exosome-like nanovesicles (HSNVs) in preventing liver fibrosis and gut permeability issues associated with NAFLD by administering these nanovesicles to mice on a high-fat diet.
  • Results showed that HSNVs significantly reduced oxidative stress and fibrosis markers in liver tissues, as well as improved gut barrier function, suggesting their potential as a protective treatment against liver damage caused by poor dietary habits.

This study developed a continuous reactor system employing a hybrid hydrogel composite synthesized using a complex sludge microbiome and an adsorbent (HSA). This HSA-based system effectively eliminated the environmental risks associated with a mixture of the antibiotics ciprofloxacin and sulfamethoxazole, which exhibited higher toxicity in combination than individually at environmentally relevant levels. Analytical chemistry experiments revealed the in-situ generation of various byproducts (BPs) within the bioreactor system, with two of these BPs recording toxicity levels that surpassed those of their parent compound.

The bioinspired camera, comprising a single lens and a curved image sensor-a photodiode array on a curved surface-, was born of flexible electronics. Its economical build lends itself well to space-constrained machine vision applications. The curved sensor, much akin to the retina, helps image focusing, but the curvature also creates a problem of image distortion, which can undermine machine vision tasks such as object recognition.

Purpose: Margin-negative surgery is very important in surgical oncology. Considering margin-negative pancreatectomy is known to be essential for cure of the pancreatic cancer, pancreatoduodenectomy with combined venous vascular or arterial resection can be a potential option for margin-negative resection, especially, in era of neoadjuvant treatment with potent systemic chemotherapy. To the contrary, special attention was not paid on combined colonic resection during PD.

Dry-powder inhalers (DPIs) are valued for their stability but formulating them is challenging due to powder aggregation and limited flowability, which affects drug delivery and uniformity. In this study, the incorporation of L-leucine (LEU) into hot-melt extrusion (HME) was proposed to enhance dispersibility while simultaneously maintaining the high aerodynamic performance of inhalable microparticles. This study explored using LEU in HME to improve dispersibility and maintain the high aerodynamic performance of inhalable microparticles.

This study reports the effects of bisphenol A (BPA) on the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis, focusing on growth performance, reproductive output, oxidative stress responses, and lipid metabolism genes. High BPA levels disrupted peak daily offspring production and led to oxidative stress and increased superoxide dismutase and catalase activity. The research identified distinctive monoacylglycerol O-acyltransferase (MGAT) and diacylglycerol O-acyltransferase (DGAT) genes in B.
