The shapes and structures of stretchable interconnects are pivotal in determining their functionality, allowing them to withstand bending, stretching, and twisting while maintaining their operational integrity. However, all stretchable interconnects are subjected to dynamically changing, non-uniform strains during mechanical deformation. Therefore, achieving an accurate understanding of stretchable interconnect properties, including tracking and analyzing these dynamic, non-uniform strains in real-time, remains a challenging endeavor.

Article Synopsis
  • - Increasing reports indicate that COVID-19 may impact the pancreas, leading to conditions like pancreatitis caused by high triglyceride levels (hypertriglyceridemia).
  • - A case study of a 51-year-old woman revealed severe abdominal pain and elevated triglycerides, with a subsequent COVID-19 diagnosis on day 2, requiring intensive treatment for both pancreatitis and COVID-19.
  • - The treatment successfully lowered triglyceride levels, highlighting the need for further research to understand the relationship between COVID-19, triglycerides, and pancreatic health, as complications can be serious.

  • Methyl lucidone (ML) has anti-inflammatory effects and the study aims to uncover how it works at the molecular level in human lung epithelial cells.* -
  • The research tested ML and other compounds to see how they affect MUC5AC secretion and analyzed inflammatory proteins, discovering that ML significantly lowers cytokine levels and downregulates inflammatory signaling pathways.* -
  • Results indicate that ML suppresses inflammation by inhibiting the kinase TAK1, suggesting its potential as a dietary supplement to support respiratory health and combat lung inflammation.*

Background: Cancer subtype identification is important for the early diagnosis of cancer and the provision of adequate treatment. Prior to identifying the subtype of cancer in a patient, feature selection is also crucial for reducing the dimensionality of the data by detecting genes that contain important information about the cancer subtype. Numerous cancer subtyping methods have been developed, and their performance has been compared.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic inflammatory lung disease which causes breathing problems. YPL-001, consisting of six iridoids, has potent inhibitory efficacy against COPD. Although YPL-001 has completed clinical trial phase 2a as a natural drug for COPD treatment, the most effective iridoid in YPL-001 and its mechanism for reducing airway inflammation remain unclear.

The recently defined type of cell death ferroptosis has garnered significant attention as a potential new approach to cancer treatment owing to its more immunogenic nature when compared with apoptosis. Ferroptosis is characterized by the depletion of glutathione (GSH)/glutathione peroxidase-4 (GPx4) and iron-dependent lipid peroxidation. Diplacone (DP), a geranylated flavonoid compound found in fruit, has been identified to have anti-inflammatory and anti-radical activity.

Objective: Mood disorder and borderline personality pathology (BPP) are frequently comorbid and relate to childhood trauma. We investigated the relationship between childhood trauma and BPP features in mood disorder patients versus controls.

Methods: A total of 488 mood disorder patients, particularly major depressive disorder (MDD), bipolar I disorder (BD I), and bipolar II disorder (BD II), and 734 controls were included.

Background: Childhood trauma has lasting negative impacts on individuals' psychological functioning. However, there is limited empirical evidence on the association between childhood trauma and resilience and none examining such relationship among diverse clinical populations. This study aimed to investigate the relationship in patients with major depressive disorder, bipolar I disorder, bipolar II disorder, and a comparison group.

Background: Although transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is known to be a promising therapeutic modality for unipolar depression, the efficacy and safety of tDCS for bipolar depressive episodes (BD) are still unknown and clinical trials of home-based tDCS treatment are scarce. As a result, we set out to investigate the efficacy and safety of home-based tDCS for the treatment BD.

Methods: Participants ( = 64), diagnosed as bipolar disorder as per the diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders (DSM-5), were randomly assigned to receive tDCS.

Objective: The Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris, and San Diego Autoquestionnaire (TEMPS-A) has been validated in more than 30 languages and is noted for its broad application in research and clinical settings. This study presents the first attempt to examine the reliability and validity of the TEMPS-A in Korea.

Methods: A total of 540 non-clinical participants completed the Korean TEMPS-A, which was adapted from the original English version via a comprehensive translation procedure.

In contrast to nano-processed rigid photonic crystals with fixed structures, soft photonic organic hydrogel beads with dielectric nanostructures possess advanced capabilities, such as stimuli-responsive deformation and photonic wavelength color changes. Recenlty, advanced from well-investigated mechanochromic method, an electromechanical stress approach is used to demonstrate electrically induced mechanical color shifts in soft organic photonic hydrogel beads. To better understand the electrically stretchable color change functionality in such soft organic photonic hydrogel systems, the electromechanical wavelength-tuning mechanism is comprehensively investigated in this study.

Cigarette smoke (CS) is a risk factor that can induce airway enlargement, airway obstruction, and airway mucus hypersecretion. Although studies have shown that Korean black ginseng extract (BGE) has potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities, the CS-induced inflammatory responses and molecular mechanisms are yet to be examined. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of BGE on the airway inflammatory response and its molecular mechanisms, using CS/lipopolysaccharides (LPS)-exposed animals and PMA-stimulated human airway epithelial NCI-H292 cells.

Objective: This review will focus on how AI-and, specifically, deep learning-can be applied to complement aspects of the current healthcare system. We describe how AI-based tools can augment existing clinical workflows by discussing the applications of AI to worklist prioritization and patient triage, the performance-boosting effects of AI as a second reader, and the use of AI to facilitate complex quantifications. We also introduce prominent examples of recent AI applications, such as tuberculosis screening in resource-constrained environments, the detection of lung cancer with screening CT, and the diagnosis of COVID-19.

Purpose: Th17 cells and their cytokines are implicated in the pathogenesis of various autoimmune diseases. Retinoic acid-related orphan receptor alpha (RORĪ±) is a transcription factor for the differentiation and the inflammatory functions of Th17 cells. In this study, we generated the nucleus-transducible form of transcription modulation domain of RORĪ± (nt-RORĪ±-TMD) to investigate the functional roles of RORĪ± in vitro and in vivo under normal physiological condition without genetic alteration.

  • The study focuses on developing and validating a new tool called the Mood Instability Questionnaire-Trait (MIQ-T) to measure mood instability in patients with mood disorders.
  • An exploratory factor analysis identified five key components of mood instability, leading to a reliable 59-item questionnaire that showed high internal consistency and strong correlations with existing clinical measures.
  • Results indicated that patients with bipolar II disorder showed significantly higher scores on the MIQ-T compared to those with bipolar I disorder, major depressive disorder, and the general population, supporting its effectiveness as a measurement tool for mood instability.

Pancreatic islet transplantation is the fundamental treatment for insulin-dependent diabetes; however, donor shortage is a major hurdle in its use as a standard treatment. Accordingly, differentiated insulin-producing cells (DIPCs) are being developed as a new islet source. Differentiation efficiency could be enhanced if the spheroid structure of the natural islets could be recapitulated.
