is an orchid genus containing about 70 species in tropical and subtropical Asia with high morphological diversity. The phylogenetic relationships among this genus have not been fully resolved, and the plastome evolution has not been investigated either. In this study, five plastomes of were newly reported, and sixteen plastomes of were used to conduct comparative and phylogenetic analyses.

Defect engineering is considered as a flexible and effective mean to improve the performance of Fenton-like reactions. Herein, a simple method is employed to synthesize CoO catalysts with Co-O vacancy pairs (V) for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. Multi-scaled characterization, experimental, and simulation results jointly revealed that the cation vacancies-V contributed to enhanced conductivity and anion vacancies-V provided a new active center for the O generation.

The current regulatory site investigation employs the J&E model to predict vapor intrusion risk. However, the J&E model assumes that the source concentration is constant for a given exposure period, which is not consistent with the actual site source under depletion. In this study, we compared the differences between the J&E model (constant source), SD source depletion model, and RBCA source depletion model for predicting indoor concentration variation as well as the risk levels during the exposure period with a case study in Beijing.

Species richness is spatially heterogeneous even in the hyperdiverse tropical floras. The main cause of uneven species richness among the four tropical regions are hot debated. To date, higher net diversification rates and/or longer colonization time have been usually proposed to contribute to this pattern.

Article Synopsis
  • - Grain sorghum has been important for global food security since ancient times and is expected to play a bigger role in food and energy security, especially with improved management techniques across different ecological zones.
  • - A study in China over two years explored the impact of ecological zones, variety, and plant spacing on sorghum yield, finding that ecological type was the most significant factor affecting yield variance (49.8%), while variety and plant spacing had lesser impacts.
  • - The growth duration of sorghum was mainly influenced by the ecological type and varied by region, as well as the variety's origin, with all tested varieties maturing in 94-108 days before fall sowing, although row spacing configurations did not significantly affect

Background: Transanal total mesorectal excision (TaTME) allows patients with ultralow rectal cancer to be treated with sphincter-saving surgery. However, accurate delineation of the distal resection margin (DRM), which is essential to achieve R0 resection for low rectal cancer in TaTME, is technically demanding.

Aim: To assess the feasibility of optical biopsy using probe-based confocal laser endomicroscopy (pCLE) to select the DRM during TaTME for low rectal cancer.

Article Synopsis
  • Sorghum is a crucial crop for food security in dry regions due to its resilience to challenges like poor soil and pests, making it suitable for low-fertility lands.
  • A two-year study in China explored how different factors—like variety, location, sowing dates, and plant density—affect sorghum yields, revealing that location had the largest impact, followed by variety, while factors like sowing date and density contributed less.
  • The research concluded that mid-maturing sorghum varieties are preferable in spring sowing early maturing areas, as they perform better under varying climate conditions during critical growth stages.

LATERAL ORGAN BOUNDARIES DOMAIN (LBD) genes encode plant-specific transcription factors that participate in regulating various developmental processes. In this study, we genetically characterized PagLBD3 encoding an important regulator of secondary growth in poplar (Populus alba × Populus glandulosa). Overexpression of PagLBD3 increased stem secondary growth in Populus with a significantly higher rate of cambial cell differentiation into phloem, while dominant repression of PagLBD3 significantly decreased the rate of cambial cell differentiation into phloem.

Article Synopsis
  • Sugar metabolism is essential for plant growth, and invertases are key enzymes that regulate this process and crop yield.
  • Research focused on soluble acid invertase in sweet sorghum revealed significant differences in gene sequences among various sorghum parent lines and hybrid varieties, particularly between B-lines and restore lines.
  • The study found that as sorghum breeding progresses, the haplotype of the invertase gene changes, potentially contributing to yield gains, and shorter gene sequences were observed, indicating enhanced gene efficiency for breeding.

Objective: To evaluate the effect and safety of cinnamaldehyde on immunosuppressed mice with invasive pulmonary candidiasis.

Methods: An immunosuppressed BALB/c mouse model was established by intraperitoneal administration of cyclophosphamide (200 mg/kg) once daily for 2 days. The immunosuppressed mouse with invasive pulmonary candidiasis model was further established by nasal perfusion of Candida albicans suspension.

Background: Gene flow in plants via pollen and seeds is asymmetrical at different geographic scales. Orchid seeds are adapted to long-distance wind dispersal but pollinium transfer is often influenced by pollinator behavior. We combined field studies with an analysis of genetic diversity among 155 physically mapped adults and 1105 F1 seedlings to evaluate the relative contribution of pollen and seed dispersal to overall gene flow among three sub-populations of the food-deceptive orchid Phalaenopsis pulcherrima on Hainan Island, China.

In order to predict the effects of climate change on the global carbon cycle, it is crucial to understand the environmental factors that affect soil carbon storage in grasslands. In the present study, we attempted to explain the relationships between the distribution of soil carbon storage with climate, soil types, soil properties and topographical factors across different types of grasslands with different grazing regimes. We measured soil organic carbon in 92 locations at different soil depth increments, from 0 to 100 cm in southwestern China.

The land use regression (LUR) model is one of the most important systematic methods to simulate the temporal and spatial differentiation of the atmospheric pollutant concentration. To explore the adaptability of the LUR model to the simulation of air pollutants at the national scale in China and the temporal and spatial variation characteristics of fine air particulate matter (PM) in China in 2015 and its correlation with different geographical elements, we built a LUR model. The LUR model is based on a geographically weighted algorithm using PM data acquired from the national control monitoring site in 2015 as the dependent variable and applying factors such as the type of land use, altitude, population, road traffic, and meteorological elements as independent variables.

Oxidative stress and inflammation are hypothesized to contribute to the pathogenesis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Resveratrol (trans-3,5,4'-trihydroxystilbene) is known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The study aimed to investigate the effects of resveratrol in a rat model with COPD on the regulation of oxidative stress and inflammation via the activation of Sirtuin1 (SIRTl) and proliferator-activated receptor-γ coactivator-1α (PGC-1α).

Aim: To examine the effects of polysaccharides (ASPS) on intestinal tight junction (TJ) disruption and nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB)/myosin light chain kinase (MLCK) activation in endotoxemia.

Methods: BALB/C mice (6-8-weeks-old) received continuous intragastric gavage of ASPS for 7 d before injection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS), or received ASPS once after LPS injection. Blood and intestinal mucosal samples were collected 6 h after LPS challenge.

Objectives: Despite the vast quantity of research among Chinese female sex workers (FSWs) to address concerns regarding HIV/sexually transmitted infection (STI) risk, there is a paucity of research on issues of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) and the missed opportunity for sexual and reproductive health (SRH) promotion among young FSWs. Our research aimed to assess the prevalence and correlates of SGBV among Chinese adolescent FSWs, and to explore SRH service utilisation.

Design And Methods: A cross-sectional study using a one-stage cluster sampling method was employed.

To gain the effects of N fertilizer applications on N2O emissions and local climate change in fertilized rubber (Hevea brasiliensis) plantations in the tropics, we measured N2O fluxes from fertilized (75 kg N ha(-1) yr(-1)) and unfertilized rubber plantations at Xishuangbanna in southwest China over a 2-year period. The N2O emissions from the fertilized and unfertilized plots were 4.0 and 2.
