Aim: To investigate the prognostic significance of estrogen receptor 1 (ER1) and vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A) expression in primary gallbladder carcinoma (GBC) to identify new prognostic markers for this malignancy.

Methods: Using immunohistochemistry, we investigated ER1 and VEGF-A expression in 78 GBC and 78 cholelithiasis (CS) tissues. The results were correlated with clinicopathological features.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore the role of forkhead box protein M1 (FoxM1) in epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) during hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) progression and its impact on metastasis.
  • Researchers evaluated FoxM1 and E-cadherin expressions in tissue samples using methods like immunohistochemical staining and statistical analysis, finding a significant correlation between FoxM1 levels and HCC recurrence and survival.
  • Results indicated that higher levels of FoxM1 were associated with larger tumors and increased invasiveness, while its overexpression led to reduced E-cadherin levels and promoted EMT, highlighting its potential as a target for understanding HCC metastasis.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how FoxM1, a transcription factor linked to cancer progression, affects the anti-cancer effects of sorafenib in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells.
  • Sorafenib was found to inhibit cell growth and invasion in HCC cell lines, showing a dose-dependent response and altering the expression of cancer-related proteins like FoxM1, MMP-2, Ki-67, and p53.
  • In animal studies, sorafenib reduced tumor growth significantly while altering protein expressions similarly to the in vitro findings, suggesting its potential as a treatment for HCC by targeting FoxM1.

Background: PSF1 is a subunit of the GINS complex which is essential for establishment of DNA replication forks, and the progression of the replisome. Previous studies have shown a close relationship between PSF1 and cell cycle in the proliferation of immature cells as well as tumors. The purpose of this study was to measure PSF1 expression in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) tissues, and determine the effects of down-regulation of PSF1 expression on growth of cancer cells, the cell cycle, apoptosis and cell invasiveness.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore how reducing Forkhead box M1 (FoxM1) impacts the growth and invasion of gallbladder cancer cells (GBC-SD).
  • Researchers used specific shRNAs to knock down FoxM1, evaluated the effectiveness of this knockdown, and measured changes in cell viability, migration, and invasion.
  • Results showed that the best shRNA significantly decreased FoxM1 expression, reduced cell viability, and inhibited the cancer cells' ability to migrate and invade, indicating a potential role of FoxM1 in cancer progression.

Aim: To elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying the immunosuppressive effects of emodin isolated from Rheum palmatum L.

Methods: Human T cells were isolated from the peripheral venous blood of 10 healthy adult donors. Cell viability was analyzed with MTT assay.

Gallbladder carcinoma, the most frequent malignant neoplasm of the biliary tract system, has always been considered to feature late clinical presentation and diagnosis, limited treatment options and an extremely poor prognosis. In recent years, while the incidence of gallbladder cancer has appeared to be on the increase, the available treatment methods have not greatly improved survival of the affected patients. Thus, exploring new therapeutic targets for this devastating disease is an urgent matter at present.

Biliary tract cancers, broadly described as malignancies that arise from the biliary tract epithelia, are usually divided into two major clinical phenotypes: cholangiocarcinoma and gallbladder cancer, differing in etiopathogenesis, risk factors, and perhaps molecular and genetic signatures. Atypical symptoms and lack of tumor biomarkers make it difficult to diagnose in early stages. At the time of presentation, few patients are candidates for potentially curative surgical resection.

Aim: To elaborate the clinicopathologic features of colorectal cancer-related pyogenic liver abscess (PLA).

Methods: Reported cases of colorectal cancer-related PLAs were collected from the literature published up to October 2011 and evaluated for their clinicopathologic features. Data of collected cases included demographics, clinical presentation, microbial findings and treatment.

Objective: To improve the diagnosis of primary gallbladder carcinoma (GBC) with/without hepatic metastases by analyzing our experience of different GBC treatment in our patients.

Methods: A retrospective study was carried out to analyze the clinical data of the 139 patients with GBC who underwent hepatic resection in our unit from January 2003 to December 2007. Patients were divided into two groups according to whether they demonstrated hepatic invasion.

We present the case of a 66-year-old woman with a huge gastrointestinal stromal tumor of the stomach that traversed her upper abdomen. The predominant abdominal sign was a huge, palpable mass, but there were no other distinctive findings in her physical examination or her routine blood workup, including biochemical markers. It was difficult to judge the origin of the mass upon imaging.

Serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is a significant marker for clinical diagnosis and prognosis evaluation in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients. However, some proportion of liver cancer patients are AFP-negative (AFP ≤20 ng/ml). In order to study the differences between clinicopathological factors and prognosis of alpha-fetoprotein negative and positive patients, a total of 114 cases (41 AFP-negative and 73 AFP-positive) were selected for our research.

Background: The hepatocellular carcinoma is very common in China. Our aim in this report was to investigate clinical and pathological factors based on the current decade data that could influence prognosis of HCC patients after hepatectomy.

Methods: Between 2002 and 2009, all patients undergoing hepatectomy for HCC were followed up and reviewed retrospectively.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess how various surgical factors influence survival rates in patients with primary liver cancer.
  • A retrospective analysis of 114 patients who underwent hepatic resection revealed that intraoperative blood loss, blood transfusion, and operation time were significant predictors of better survival rates.
  • The findings suggest that optimizing surgery by reducing operation time and blood loss can enhance patient outcomes after liver surgery.
