Article Synopsis
  • Acoustic emission (AE) technology is used for nondestructive testing to analyze material properties but suffers from strong interference due to wave reflections at boundaries.
  • To address this issue, the paper proposes an innovative solution called the Acoustic Spiral Black Hole (ASABH), which reduces AE signal reflections and improves the signal-to-noise ratio.
  • The researchers validate the ASABH's effectiveness through finite element modeling and experimental tests, demonstrating its ability to mitigate wave reflections across different materials and structural designs.

As an essential auxiliary tool for acoustic emission (AE) detection, waveguide rods are widely used in testing situations where sensors cannot contact the specimens directly, such as high temperature, cryogenic, corrosion, radiation, etc. However, the AE signal attenuation in waveguide rod makes the risk of missing weak acoustic emission events in damage detection, which limits the application of waveguide rods. Therefore, in this work, a novel waveguide rod was presented based on acoustic black hole (ABH) theory to enhance the AE signal before reaching the sensor through the energy convergence effect of the ABH.

The hazardous trace elements (HTEs) emitted during the municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) process have been widely concerned. In this work, the bottom ash (BA), heat recovery boiler ash (HA), and ash after desulfurization (SA) were collected to explore the occurrence forms of HTEs in the three types of ash and their relationship with minerals and leaching characteristics. The results show that the volatility of the seven studied HTEs follows the order of Cd, As > Ni, Zn > Pb > Cr, Cu.

Low-flow removal of refractory ascites is critical to treating cirrhosis and digestive system tumor, and thus, commercial ascites pump emerged lately. The rigid structure of clinically available pumps rises complication rate and lack of flow rate monitoring hinders early warning of abnormalities. Herein, a soft artificial system was proposed inspired by lymph for interactive ascites transfer with great biocompatibility.

Objectives: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is often diagnosed with cervical lymph node metastasis. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) signalling are considered to play important roles in promoting tumour malignancy. The detailed biological interaction of MSCs and IL-6 and the subsequent effect on OSCC metastasis remain largely unclear.

Luminescent monitoring of endogenous hydrogen peroxide (H O ) in tumors is conducive to understanding metastasis and developing novel therapeutics. The clinical transformation is obstructed by the limited light penetration depth, toxicity of nano-probes, and lack of long-term monitoring modes of up to days or months. New monitoring modes are introduced via specific probes and implantable devices, which can achieve real-time monitoring with a readout frequency of 0.

This study aimed to explore failure mechanisms of carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP)-aluminium (Al) single-lap adhesive joints which CFRP adherends had different stacking sequences. These results showed that fatigue performance of CFRP decreased as the number of 45° plies increased, which caused the initial failure location to gradually move from the adhesive layer towards the CFRP. Under high load levels, joint-failure models were influenced by the stacking sequence of CFRP; large-area cohesive failure occurred in joints when the CFRP stacking sequence was [0/90] and [0/45/-45/90], and delamination failure occurred when the CFRP stacking sequence was [45/-45], due to the weak interlaminar properties of CFRP.

Particle-reinforced composites are widely applied as nuclear radiation shielding materials for their excellent comprehensive properties. The work aimed to calculate the influence of the functional reinforced particles spatial arrangement on the neutron shielding performance of composites and attempted to explain the influence mechanism by investigating the neutron flux distribution in the materials. Firstly, four suitable physical models were established based on the Monte Carlo Particle Transport Program (MCNP) and mathematical software MATLAB, namely the RSA (Random Sequential Adsorption) Model with particles random arrangement and FCC Model, BCC Model and Staggered Arrangement Model (SA Model) with particle periodic arrangements.

Objective: Pituitary adenomas are the most common type of pituitary disorders, which usually occur in young adults and often affect the patient's physical development, labor capacity and fertility. Clinical free texts noted in electronic medical records (EMRs) of pituitary adenomas patients contain abundant diagnosis and treatment information. However, this information has not been well utilized because of the challenge to extract information from unstructured clinical texts.

Bowel sounds (BSs) have important clinical value in the auxiliary diagnosis of digestive diseases, but due to the inconvenience of long-term monitoring and too much interference from environmental noise, they have not been well studied. Most of the current electronic stethoscopes are hard and bulky without the function of noise reduction, and their application for long-term wearable monitoring of BS in noisy clinical environments is very limited. In this paper, a flexible dual-channel digital auscultation patch with active noise reduction is designed and developed, which is wireless, wearable, and conformably attached to abdominal skin to record BS more accurately.

Thrombosis and restenosis after vascular reconstruction procedures may cause complications such as stroke, but a clinical means to continuously monitor vascular conditions is lacking. Conventional ultrasound probes are rigid, particularly for postoperative patients with fragile skin. Techniques based on photoplethysmography or thermal analysis provide only relative changes in flow volume and have a shallow detection depth.
