Whole-cell biosensors provide a convenient detection tool for the high-throughput screening of genetically engineered biocatalytic activity. But establishing a biosensor for an anthropogenic molecule requires both a custom transporter and a transcription factor. This results in an unavoidable "Catch-22" situation in which transporter activity cannot be easily confirmed without a biosensor and a biosensor cannot be established without a functional transporter in a host organism.

Aiming towards simplifying sample preparation procedure, the present work explores use of unmodified laboratory filter paper as sorbent for extraction of nine basic drugs (five antidepressants, four benzodiazepines, and ketamine) from human blood samples and their analysis by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The procedure termed as cellulose paper sorptive extraction (CPSE) is straightforward. It involves adsorption of target analytes from deproteinized diluted blood samples on the unmodified cellulose paper followed by elution into 2 mL of methanol.

Objective: The incidence and risk factors for chronic depression after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) are described.

Methods: Patients with aSAH treated at a single institution (January 1, 2003-December 31, 2019) and a modified Rankin Scale score ≤3 at follow-up who were evaluated for chronic depression were analyzed. Chronic depression was defined using a depression screening questionnaire as ≥5 positive answers for symptoms lasting >2 weeks.

Probiotics can effectively improve ulcerative colitis (UC), but the mechanism is still unclear. Here, shotgun metagenome and transcriptome analyses were performed to explore the therapeutic effect and the mechanism of the probiotic Lactobacillus plantarum HNU082 (Lp082) on UC. The results showed that Lp082 treatment significantly ameliorated dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced UC in mice, which was manifested as increases in body weight, water intake, food intake, and colon length and decreases in disease activity index (DAI), immune organ index, inflammatory factors, and histopathological scores after Lp082 intake.

Background: Primary extraosseous intracranial Ewing's sarcoma, also known as a peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor or "small round blue cell tumor," is an extremely rare entity with limited representation in the literature beyond the pediatric population.

Observations: A 67-year-old male suffering occipital headache, nausea, and gait disturbance was found to have a large, avidly contrast-enhancing cerebellopontine angle mass extending into the cervical spinal canal with associated mass effect on medulla, cerebellum, fourth ventricle, and cervical spinal cord. This mass was not present on the imaging from 8 years prior.

The positioning of the graphene layer implantation in such structure affects the sensitivity.
