Erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP) is an extremely rare disease which is often unrecognized as diagnosis. In the recent article Lui et al describe a patient with a new diagnosis of EPP with severe liver injury. Approximately 5%-20% of patients with EPP develop liver manifestations.

Background: A 22-year-old female presented with edema, diarrhea, hypoalbuminemia and pancytopenia. She had previously been diagnosed with congenital disorder of glycosylation type Ib, and had a history of congenital hepatic fibrosis, portal hypertension and esophageal varices. In the past she had refused mannose therapy because of associated diarrhea and abdominal pain.

Background: Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) is an autosomal dominant hamartomatous polyposis syndrome of the gastrointestinal tract, caused by a germline STK11/LKB1 mutation. Nasal polyposis was described in the original report by Peutz. Recently, a molecular-genetic association between nasal polyposis and PJS has been reported.
