A validated audio-visual educational module on examination skills in ophthalmology for undergraduate medical students in the COVID-19 season - An observational longitudinal study.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the impact of an audio visual (AV) teaching module on basic torchlight examination of the eye and direct ophthalmoscopy for undergraduate medical students.

Methods: This observational longitudinal study was done on 33 consecutive medical interns during their Ophthalmology posting from December 2019 to March 2020 at a medical college in South-India. An AV-module was created using animation graphics, narratives, demonstrations on normal individuals and on patients with positive signs.

An experimental study to test the efficacy of Mesenchymal Stem Cells in reducing corneal scarring in an ex-vivo organ culture model.

In this study, we evaluated the effect of placenta-derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) versus placebo in improving corneal transparency following experimental injury in an ex-vivo organ culture model of post-mortem human corneas. We also compared the influence of MSCs on the basic histopathology of the cornea and the immunohistochemistry markers of fibrotic corneal scarring. Mesenchymal Stem Cells extracted from the placenta were isolated and expanded in-vitro.

Quantification of corneal transparency in post-mortem human corneas using laser scatter image analysis.

Background: The cornea is a highly transparent structure covering the anterior one-fifth of the eyeball. The suitability of post-mortem donor corneas for keratoplasty is currently qualitatively assessed. This makes inferences prone to bias and subjective variability.

Objective quantification of corneal haziness using anterior segment optical coherence tomography.

Purpose: To quantify normal corneal transparency by anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) by measuring the average pixel intensity. To analyze the variation in the average pixel intensity in mild and severe grades of corneal opacities.

Methods: This is an observational, cross-sectional study of 38 eyes from 19 patients with mild or severe grades of corneal opacities greater than 3 mm and a normal contralateral cornea.

Increasing compliance with protective eyewear to reduce ocular injuries in stone-quarry workers in Tamil Nadu, India: a pragmatic, cluster randomised trial of a single education session versus an enhanced education package delivered over six months.

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of standard education versus enhanced education in increasing compliance with protective eyewear to prevent ocular injuries in stone-quarry workers.

Design: Pragmatic, allocation concealed, participant and outcome assessor blinded, cluster randomised trial.

Setting: Six stone-quarries around Vellore, Tamil Nadu, South India.

Tectonic corneal graft for conjunctival rhinosporidiosis with scleral melt.

A 16 year old girl presented with irritation and watering of the right eye for 3 months. On examination, the superior perilimbal sclera was ectatic with incarcerated uveal tissue covered by conjunctiva. The conjunctiva showed discreet, yellow white mucoid spots.

Primary conjunctival tuberculosis in a 14 year old girl.

Tuberculosis is a common disease in India. However, tuberculosis primarily affecting the conjuctiva is a rare entity. We report a 14-year-old girl who presented with unilateral eye discharge, watering, redness and itching for two weeks.
