Optical interconnections made using two-dimensional arrays of top-surface-emitting microlasers and integrated free-space optics are discussed for use in chip-to-chip communications. A demonstration setup with a 2 x 2 array of lasers is presented. System parameters, such as light efficiency, the number of data channels, thermal effects, power requirements, and the issue of hybrid integration of laser chips with passive optics, are considered.

The intrinsic mid-infrared optical absorption of a ZrF(4)-BaF(2)-LaF(3)-AlF(3)-NaF (ZBLAN) glass has been determined by combining laser calorimetry and spark-source mass spectrographic analysis. The total optical absorption of four samples of varying purity was measured at 3.9 microm with laser calorimetry.

We reported previously that, when exposed to high osmotic pressure, Lactobacillus acidophilus IFO 3532 cells accumulated N,N,N-trimethylglycine (glycine betaine), which serves as a compatible intracellular solute. When grown in medium with high osmotic pressure, these cells also accumulated one amino acid, proline. The uptake of [3H]proline by resting, glucose-energized cells was stimulated by increasing the osmotic pressure of the assay medium with 0.

A Fabry-Perot-type interferometer is described that permits the concurrent measurement of the coefficient of thermal expansion (alpha) and the thermooptic coefficient (dn/dT) of transparent materials. Measurements of the a and the dn/dT of vitreous silica and a heavy-metal fluoride glass show that the technique is accurate, reproducible, and easily performed. In addition, the technique is used to show that the dn/dT of heavy-metal fluoride glasses is negative and temperature dependent.

A method of securing a dressing on scalp wounds, using silastic foam, is described. This method has the advantage of leaving the rest of the scalp uncovered and is particularly effective in the unco-operative patient.

We investigate scaling with the cross-sectional area of energy and speed for optical devices and of optical design, speed, and thermal dissipation for device arrays. Theory and experiments clearly point to lower energy and faster speed for smaller devices and to simpler optical design, smaller propagation time delays, and higher thermal dissipation capability for smaller array sizes. We conclude that the development of high speed digital optical processors will depend on small devices interconnected by microoptic systems.

A recombinant vaccinia virus was constructed that expressed poliovirus coat precursor protein P1 fused to about two-thirds of the 2A proteinase. The truncated 2A segment could be cleaved away from the P1 region by coinfecting with poliovirus type 1, 2, or 3 or with human rhinovirus 14 but not with encephalomyocarditis virus. Further cleavage of the vector-derived P1 to yield mature poliovirus capsid proteins was not observed.

Two inner city general practices in east London jointly provide care outside normal working hours without using deputising services for about 14,000 patients. The statistics on workload were reviewed for 1987 and 1988. An overall rate of face to face consultations of 4.

A preliminary investigation of the external validity of MMPI scales designed to measure certain DSM-III Personality disorders (N = 108) is reported. Results indicate that many of these scales are effective for discriminating clinically diagnosed personality disorders from control subjects (N = 640).

Results of EMIT, Abuscreen RIA, and GC/MS tests for THC metabolites in a high volume random urinalysis program are compared. Samples were field tested by non-laboratory personnel with an EMIT system using a 100 ng/mL cutoff. Samples were then sent to the Army Forensic Toxicology Drug Testing Laboratory (WRAMC) at Fort Meade, Maryland, where they were tested by RIA (Abuscreen) using a statistical 100 ng/mL cutoff.

Seventeen subjects were used in this study to measure the long-term effects of low-dose quinine ingestion as correlated with electronystagmographic (ENG) findings in humans. Four subjects served as controls, nine subjects (low-dose group) drank 52.5 mg of quinine per day, and four subjects (high-dose group) drank 105 mg of quinine per day in commercially prepared tonic water.

We demonstrate the potential for all-optical processing of data transmitted over single-mode fibers using a bistable optical device (BOD). A stream of clock/bias pulses transmitted over a 1-km-long single-mode fiber (SMF) is processed by a pseudorandom data sequence of picosecond pulses transmitted over another 1-km SMF with the help of an optical bistable device. The processed signal from the BOD is transmitted over another kilometer of SMF and detected.

The baculovirus, Autographa california nuclear polyhedrosis virus, induced a new aphidicolin-sensitive, alpha-like, DNA polymerase upon infection of the lepidopteran noctuid, Trichoplusia ni. The new virus-induced DNA polymerase could be separated from the host alpha-like polymerase by phosphocellulose chromatography. The two polymerases differed in their sensitivities to heat inactivation, high salt concentrations, and 0.

A simple, relatively fast, coulometric method to determine both the surface-moisture and bound-moisture content of a wide variety of lyophilized, allergenic extracts has been developed. The method has been found suitable for the detection of residual-moisture levels in both lyophilized protein and carbohydrate samples. Isothermal rate-changes in moisture desorption, normalized with respect to sample size and plotted versus time, yield desorption curves which are characteristic of several individual classes of lyophilized materials.
