Purpose: Lower respiratory infections remain the most lethal communicable disease worldwide. Viral and bacterial coinfections (VBC) are common complications in patients with seasonal influenza and are associated with around 25% of all influenza-related deaths. The burden of pneumonia in patients with VBC in Spain is poorly characterized.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examines how avoidant coping during early pregnancy affects the relationship between postpartum depressive symptoms and a mother's views on her relationship with her baby and her self-confidence.
  • - Involved 116 low-risk mothers from a Spanish hospital, measuring avoidant coping in the first trimester and postpartum depression and perceptions four months after childbirth.
  • - Findings reveal that avoidant coping is linked to negative perceptions of the baby and decreased self-confidence in caregiving, worsening the effects of postpartum depression on the mother-infant relationship.

Introduction: HIV-infected patients show an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). In the general population, lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2) appears to be an independent predictor of CVD. We aimed to study associations between Lp-PLA2 plasma levels and other risk factors for CVD in HIV patients.

Article Synopsis
  • A study in Spain analyzed the incidence and outcomes of revision total hip arthroplasty (RTHA) over 8 years, focusing on patients aged 40 and older.
  • The overall incidence of RTHA showed a slight increase from 20.2 to 21.8 per 100,000 inhabitants between 2001 and 2008, with notable rises in men and older age groups.
  • In-hospital mortality also increased slightly, alongside a significant rise in costs of treatment, indicating a growing burden on healthcare resources for RTHA over the study period.

Background: Hip arthroplasties is one of the most frequent surgical procedures in Spain and are conducted mainly in elderly subjects. We aim to analyze changes in incidence, co-morbidity profile, length of hospital stay (LOHS), costs and in-hospital mortality (IHM) of patients undergoing primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) over an 8-year study period in Spain.

Methods: We selected all surgical admissions in individuals aged ≥ 40 years who had received a primary THA (ICD-9-CM procedure code 81.
