Regulation of PARP1/2 and the tankyrases: emerging parallels.

ADP-ribosylation is a prominent and versatile post-translational modification, which regulates a diverse set of cellular processes. Poly-ADP-ribose (PAR) is synthesised by the poly-ADP-ribosyltransferases PARP1, PARP2, tankyrase (TNKS), and tankyrase 2 (TNKS2), all of which are linked to human disease. PARP1/2 inhibitors have entered the clinic to target cancers with deficiencies in DNA damage repair.

The British nuclear medicine research strategy - the framework.

The British Nuclear Medicine Society (BNMS) has developed a Research Strategy framework led by the Research Champions of the BNMS and overseen by the BNMS Research and Innovation Committee. The objectives of the Research Strategy are to improve translation of cutting-edge nuclear medicine research from bench to bedside, the implementation of state-of-the-art multimodality technologies and to enhance multicentre radionuclide research in the UK. It strives to involve patients and the public in radionuclide research and to contribute to and work with the multi-professional national and international organisations involved in research with an ultimate aim to improve nuclear medicine services, and patients' outcomes and care.

Association between body mass index (BMI) and [I]Ioflupane (DaTSCAN) availabilities in patients with parkinsonism using single-photon emission computed tomography-computed tomography (SPECT-CT).

Aim: [I]Ioflupane (DaTSCAN) has a high binding affinity to the dopamine (DA) transporter (DaT) and tenfold less affinity to serotonin (5-HT) transporter (SERT). Both neurotransmitters are considered to contribute to body weight regulation. This study assesses the association between body mass index (BMI) and DaTSCAN availability in brain.

Quantitative [123]I-Ioflupane DaTSCAN single-photon computed tomography-computed tomography in Parkinsonism.

Aim: [123]I-Ioflupane (DaTSCAN) binds to the presynaptic dopamine transporter (DAT) and with a lower affinity to the serotonin transporter (SERT). We aimed to develop a novel method to quantify absolute uptake in the striatal (predominantly DAT binding) and extra-striatal regions (mainly SERT binding) using single-photon computed tomography-computed tomography (SPECT-CT) DaTSCAN and to improve DaTSCAN image quality.

Method: Twenty-six patients with Parkinsonism underwent DaTSCAN SPECT-CT prospectively.

Urinary diversion following radical cystectomy and neoadjuvant chemotherapy is the gold standard for the management of muscle-invasive bladder cancer. Urinary diversions are at an increased risk of urolithiasis as a result of various factors. Traditional surgical intervention has included open cystolithotomy which has given way to minimally invasive techniques as of late.

Establishing a Local Diagnostic Reference Level for Bone Scintigraphy in a Nigerian Tertiary Hospital.

It is of vital importance to optimize the radiation dose to patients undergoing radionuclide bone scanning. This is one of the most common nuclear medicine procedures in many parts of the world, including Nigeria, and the current study was performed as part of a national survey to establish diagnostic reference levels (DRLs) for common nuclear medicine procedures in Nigeria in order to optimize their use. Nuclear medicine was only recently introduced to the health-care system in Nigeria, with only 2 centers presently conducting these procedures.

Getting It Straight: Accommodating Rectilinear Behavior in Captive Snakes-A Review of Recommendations and Their Evidence Base.

Snakes are sentient animals and should be subject to the accepted general welfare principles of other species. However, they are also the only vertebrates commonly housed in conditions that prevent them from adopting rectilinear behavior (ability to fully stretch out). To assess the evidence bases for historical and current guidance on snake spatial considerations, we conducted a literature search and review regarding recommendations consistent with or specifying ≥1 × and <1 × snake length enclosure size.

Lacrimal scintigraphy BNMS Guidelines.

The purpose of this guideline is to assist specialists in Nuclear Medicine and Radionuclide Radiology in recommending, performing, interpreting and reporting the results of lacrimal scintigraphy (also known as Dacroscintigraphy). AAA+ ATPases are a diverse protein superfamily which power a vast number of cellular processes, from protein degradation to genome replication and ribosome biogenesis. The latest advances in cryo-EM have resulted in a spectacular increase in the number and quality of AAA+ ATPase structures. This abundance of new information enables closer examination of different types of structural insertions into the conserved core, revealing discrepancies in the current classification of AAA+ modules into clades.

Introduction: A worldwide mounting in the incidence and prevalence of urolithiasis has been observed. The standard treatment of urologic stone disease (USD) has changed from open surgery to extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy, percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), or ureteroscopy depending on the size and location of the stone. Although the number of atomic-resolution insights into contractile bacteriophage tails, bacterial type six secretion systems and R-pyocins is rapidly increasing, structural information on the contraction of bacterial phage-like protein-translocation structures directed towards eukaryotic hosts is scarce. Here, we characterize the antifeeding prophage AFP from Serratia entomophila by cryo-electron microscopy.

Pediatric testicular torsion: does patient transfer affect time to intervention or surgical outcomes at a rural tertiary care center?

Background: Testicular torsion (TT) is a urologic emergency that requires prompt surgical intervention. In rural Appalachia, patients are often transferred from surrounding communities due to lack of urologic care. We hypothesized that those transferred would have delayed intervention and higher rates of orchiectomy when compared to those who presented directly to our hospital.
