Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to investigate how socioeconomic factors affect the time between abnormal cervical cancer screenings and follow-up colposcopy in patients at a large urban medical center, focusing on differences based on insurance status.
  • - Researchers looked at data from patients aged 21-65 who had colposcopy appointments between January 2021 and January 2022, comparing patient demographics and the waiting times for colposcopy based on whether they were seen by resident or faculty practices.
  • - Findings revealed that publicly insured patients in the resident practice waited significantly longer for colposcopy (median of 79.5 days) compared to those in the faculty practice (median of 34 days), suggesting a need to address these disparities in healthcare access.

Objective: Complete bilateral salpingectomy (CBS) can decrease the risk of developing ovarian cancer, although adoption of CBS at cesarean delivery (CD) for permanent contraception has been low. The primary objective was to measure the annual rates of CBS at CD before and after an educational initiative. The secondary objective was to assess rates of providers who offer CBS at CD and their comfort level with the procedure.

Objective: The primary goal of this study is to examine disparities in high-risk endometrial cancer (EC) patients in relation to rates of genetic referrals (GR), testing (GT), and counseling (GC).

Methods: This is a retrospective analysis of patients with newly diagnosed EC between January 1, 2014 and September 1, 2020 at a single institution. Patients were defined as high-risk EC patients when they were 1) diagnosed at 50 years or younger, 2) had a positive family history for cancer or 3) had evidence of loss of mismatch repair protein expression on tumor immunohistochemistry.

Article Synopsis
  • Ovarian carcinosarcomas (OCS) are aggressive tumors that mainly affect older women but can occasionally impact younger individuals, as shown in a case of a 41-year-old undergoing fertility treatment.
  • A pelvic mass was discovered during routine checks, leading to surgery that confirmed the diagnosis of primary ovarian carcinosarcoma, followed by neoadjuvant chemotherapy and debulking surgery.
  • The typical treatment approach involves platinum-based chemotherapy prior to cytoreductive surgery, but the specific risk factors related to assisted reproductive technology and their contribution to developing OCS remain under-researched.

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a syndrome characterized by pathologic immune activation in which prompt recognition and initiation of immune suppression is essential for survival. Children with HLH have many overlapping clinical features with critically ill children with sepsis and systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) in whom alternative therapies are indicated. To determine whether plasma biomarkers could differentiate HLH from other inflammatory conditions and to better define a core inflammatory signature of HLH, concentrations of inflammatory plasma proteins were compared in 40 patients with HLH to 47 pediatric patients with severe sepsis or SIRS.
