Nutrients-and by extension biosynthetic capacity-positively impact cell size in organisms throughout the tree of life. In bacteria, cell size is reduced 3-fold in response to nutrient starvation or accumulation of the alarmone ppGpp, a global inhibitor of biosynthesis.
