The quality of the coffee beverage is related to the chemical, physical, and sensory attributes of the coffee beans that vary with the geographic location of the crop, genetic factors, and post-harvest processing. So, the objective of this study was to evaluate the genetic divergence of 27 genotypes of Coffea canephora using the volatile compounds and sensory attributes profile to select genotypes that produce a coffee beverage with high sensory quality. This genetic diversity was estimated from the Euclidean distance matrix using non-standard data and the Unweighted Pair-Group Method Using Arithmetic Averages (UPGMA).

Ethylmalonic acid (EMA) accumulates in tissues and biological fluids of patients affected by short-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (SCADD) and ethylmalonic encephalopathy, illnesses characterized by neurological and muscular symptoms. Considering that the mechanisms responsible for the brain and skeletal muscle damage in these diseases are poorly known, in the present work we investigated the effects of acute EMA administration on redox status parameters in cerebral cortex and skeletal muscle from 30-day-old rats. Animals received three subcutaneous injections of EMA (6 μmol/g; 90 min interval between injections) and were killed 1 h after the last administration.

Phenylketonuria (PKU) is a disease caused by a deficiency of phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH), resulting in an accumulation of phenylalanine (Phe) in the brain tissue, cerebrospinal fluid, and other tissues of PKU patients. Considering that high levels of Phe are associated with neurological dysfunction and that the mechanisms underlying the neurotoxicity in PKU remain poorly understood, the main objective of this study was to investigate the in vivo and in vitro effects of Phe on DNA damage, as determined by the alkaline comet assay. The results showed that, compared to control group, the levels of DNA migration were significantly greater after acute administration of Phe, p-chlorophenylalanine (p-Cl-Phe, an inhibitor of PAH), or a combination thereof in cerebral cortex and blood, indicating DNA damage.
