Urine cytology and adjunct markers for detection and surveillance of bladder cancer.

Urine cytology coupled with cystoscopic examination has been and remains the standard in the initial evaluation of lower urinary tract lesions to rule out bladder cancer. However, cystoscopy is invasive and may miss some flat lesions, whereas cytology has low sensitivity in low-grade papillary disease. Additional lab-based or office-based markers are needed to aid in the evaluation of these lesions.

Chondroid syringoma with tyrosine crystals: case report and review of the literature.

Chondroid syringoma (CS) is a relatively rare cutaneous mixed tumor arising from sweat glands. It usually presents in the head and neck area as an asymptomatic, slow-growing, firm, circumscribed, lobulated nodule within the dermis or subcutaneous fat. CSs share morphologic similarities with their salivary gland counterparts, pleomorphic adenomas (benign mixed tumors).

Pathology of late-onset anthracycline cardiomyopathy.

Introduction: Anthracyclines are known to have acute cardiotoxicity. Anthracycline-induced dilated cardiomyopathy may have late onset and present years after administration of the drug. Several studies have described the clinical findings in patients with late-onset cardiomyopathy, including electrocardiography, exercise testing, echocardiography, and histological findings in endomyocardial biopsies; however, there is little information on the pathological changes that are found in explanted or autopsy hearts.

Cellular rejection of the conduction system after orthotopic heart transplantation for congenital atrioventricular block.

We report a case of severe acute cellular rejection of the cardiac allograft conduction system in a 15-month-old girl who received orthotopic heart transplantation (OHT) for congestive heart failure from a congenital heart block. Post-operatively, the patient was treated for clinical evidence of rejection, but did not have electrocardiographic findings of heart block. Six weeks after transplantation, the patient developed sudden-onset bradycardia and died.

Tophaceous gout of the first costochondral junction in a heart transplant patient.

We report the case of a 49-year-old man with a 10-year history of gout, who presented with a painful left first costochondral junction mass. A computed tomography (CT)-guided biopsy of the mass revealed foreign body giant cell reaction and crystalline deposition consistent with tophaceous gout.
