1q21.1 hemizygous microdeletion is a copy number variant leading to eightfold increased risk of schizophrenia. Systemic injection of 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) in mice is one of the primary models used to evaluate neuroprotective and symptomatic treatment strategies for Parkinson's disease. Many behavioral methods for evaluation of MPTP toxicity have been described, but they often involve challenging scenarios that require handling and transfer of animals to novel environments and in some cases prior animal training. These factors can profoundly influence animal behavior and potentially influence experimental outcome.

The neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) can bind to and activate fibroblast growth factor receptor 1 (FGFR1). However, there are four major FGFR isoforms (FGFR1-FGFR4), and it is not known whether NCAM also interacts directly with the other three FGFR isoforms. In this study, we show by surface plasmon resonance analysis that NCAM can bind to FGFR2 with an affinity similar to that for the NCAM-FGFR1 interaction.
