As regards neuropeptide concentrations statistically significant changes in the ileum and lymph nodes were found only in case of Gal and VIP. The present study investigated the influence of intravesically instilled resiniferatoxin (RTX) or tetrodotoxin (TTX) on the distribution, number, and chemical coding of noradrenergic and cholinergic nerve fibers (NF) supplying the urinary bladder in female pigs. Samples from the bladder wall were processed for double-labelling immunofluorescence with antibodies against cholinergic and noradrenergic markers and some other neurotransmitter substances. Both RTX and TTX caused a significant decrease in the number of cholinergic NF in the urinary bladder wall (in the muscle coat, submucosa, and beneath the urothelium).

The present study has disclosed for the first time the distribution and peripheral nerve pathways of autonomic and primary afferent neurons projecting to the bulbourethral gland (BG) in a mammalian species, the pig (n = 5), using combined retrograde tracing and cutting the hypogastric (n = 3) or pelvic (n = 3) nerve. Neurons projecting to the right BG were found in pelvic ganglia (PG), sympathetic chain ganglia (SChG; L2-S3), the caudal mesenteric ganglion (CaMG) and dorsal root ganglia (DRG; L1-L3, S1-S3). In general, the majority (about 75%) of them were located in the ipsilateral ganglia.

In this study, the innervation of the urethral muscle in adult male pigs was investigated using combined NADPH-diaphorase (NADPH-d) histochemistry and immunocytochemistry. Nerve fibres supplying the urethral muscle were found to show NADPH-d activity and they also expressed immunoreactivity to catecholamine synthesising enzymes including tyrosine hydoxylase (TH) and dopamine-beta-hydroxylase (DbetaH) as well as to: vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) and neuropeptide Y (NPY).
