[Experiences in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia with high power potassium-titanyl-phosphate (KTP) laser].

Unlabelled: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) exist in about 70% men after 60 years old. High power KTP laser is a new tool for the treatment of BPH.

Material And Method: 49 men were treated by photoselective vaporisation of the prostate (PVP) from August 2003 to May 2004.

[Value of the photodynamic method in the diagnosis of superficial bladder tumors].

Photodynamic diagnosis (PDD) is one of most precise method of neoplasms recognition. The aim of the study was to estimate the value of 5-amino levulinic acid in diagnosis of superficial bladder tumours. Since 1996 to March 2004, 597 cystoscopies were performed with 5-amino levulinic acid in 151 patients with superficial bladder tumours (102 men and 49 women) aged 19-87 years old.

Comparison of the bladder tumour antigen test with photodynamic diagnosis in patients with pathologically confirmed recurrent superficial urinary bladder tumours.

Objective: To verify the sensitivity of the bladder tumour antigen (BTAstat, Bard Urological, Covington, GA) test against the sensitive procedure of photodynamic diagnosis (PDD), in which 5-aminolaevulinic acid (5-ALA, a precursor of fluorescent porphyrins) is absorbed by the tumour and detected by ultraviolet cystoscopy, in the early diagnosis of urinary bladder tumours.

Patients And Methods: Forty-three patients (31 men and 12 women, age range 21-87 years) were assessed after transurethral resection of their bladder tumour using the BTAstat test and PDD. Sixty-nine biopsies from suspect areas of bladder mucosa were taken during cystoscopy under ultraviolet light and all suspect lesions electrocoagulated.

On the mitochondrial aspect of reactive oxygen species action in external magnetic fields.

Some retinoids or porphyrins can form radical pairs, alter transfer of electrons, and increase synthesis of reactive oxygen species in the mitochondrial respiratory chain. This leads to cell damage and apoptosis. We propose that co-application of an external static magnetic field of several to several hundreds miliTesla (mT) can enhance those effects by further alteration of electron flow in the mitochondrial respiratory chain, facilitation of forbidden transitions from the triplet to the singlet state of retinoid or porphyrin radicals, and modification of radical pair amount.

[Intraoperative phlebography in the diagnosis of varicocele].

We studied 42 infertile men, who had been surgically treated with modified Palomo method, with intraoperative phlebography of single or multiple testicular veins. We evaluated the efficacy of the performed procedure as well as the presence of other ways of recoil outflow and the connections between the venous vessels of the right testis. Is modified retroperitoneal lymph node dissection (MRLND) still feasible in the treatment of patients with clinical stage I non-seminomatous testicular cancer?

[Pefloxacin in the treatment of chronic urinary infection].

This study aimed at determining sensitivity of the hospital isolates to pefloxacin compared with other urinary antiseptics and assessment of its efficiency in the treatment of the chronic urinary infections. Disc diffusion technique was used to determine bacterial sensitivity to pefloxacin and other agents. Bacteria were isolated from the urine of the hospitalized patients.

Two-stage surgical treatment for male transsexuals.

G6PD activity in erythrocytes was examined in 129 people with malignant neoplasms (83 males, 46 females). In all these subjects G6PD activity in erythrocytes was markedly higher than in the controls. Tumour surgery resulted in decreased activity of that enzyme in the erythrocytes.

On the transurethral treatment of urethrostenosis in males.

The paper deals with the authors' own experience in endoscopic treatment of urethrostenosis in males. Since 1980, 86 patients have been treated in this manner. Good results were obtained in 60 (70%) after one surgical procedure and in 18 (21%) after two operations.

Five-year clinical follow-up of prostatic cancer patients treated with fosfestrol and bromocriptine.

A five-year follow-up is presented of 123 patients with recently diagnosed prostatic cancer, confirmed histopathologically and treated with fosfestrol and bromocriptine. The serum levels of testosterone and prolactin in patients with prostatic carcinoma treated with various doses of Fostrolin and bromocriptin.

In 45 patients with newly diagnosed carcinoma of the prostate, 1509 radioimmunological assays (RIA) were done for serum testosterone (T), prolactin (PRL) and growth hormone (GH). The patients were divided into 4 groups and treated with gradually lowered doses of Fostrolin and bromocriptin. Dental xeroradiography, a new imaging system designed specifically for intraoral use, provides a convenient, rapid, low-dose alternative to conventional film radiography. In this study the new imaging system was compared to conventional direct-exposure dental film technique for basic imaging characteristics of contrast, resolution, and noise. Dental xeroradiography proved to be a superior imaging system for demonstrating dental structures and did so at radiation doses one-third of those required for conventional dental (film) radiography.
