Article Synopsis
  • Self-sampling for HPV testing is effective for increasing cervical screening coverage, but there's ongoing debate about how to best manage HPV-positive results.
  • In a study with 73,699 women, various triage strategies were tested, showing that p16 immunocytology combined with other methods outperformed traditional 'ASC-US+' approaches.
  • The findings suggest that using p16 as part of a triage strategy can improve the detection of cervical cancer while also reducing unnecessary referrals for further examination.

Background: The solid transport media is a small size card that allows fast, easy DNA extraction from a variety of biological samples. In 2016 we developed a solid media transport card; for that pilot study to control the self-collection we used a pseudo-self-collection technique. The current study expands this prior work using true self-collections and only the POI card, and aims to evaluate the solid media transport card to detect HR-HPV in self-samples compared to liquid transport media.

To evaluate the value of p16 detected by p16 immunostaining as a new generation of cervical cytology for primary screening and secondary screening in population-based cervical cancer screening, and in improving cytological diagnosis. Between 2016 and 2018, 5 747 non-pregnant women aged 25-65 years with sexual history were recruited and underwent cervical cancer screening via high-risk (HR)-HPV/liquid-based cytological test (LCT) test in Shenzhen and surrounding areas. All slides were immuno-stained using p16 technology, among them, 902 cases were offered p16 detection during primary screening, and the remaining 4 845 cases were called-back by the virtue of abnormal HR-HPV and LCT results for p16 staining.

Background: We propose an economical cervical screening research and implementation strategy designed to take into account the typically slow natural history of cervical cancer and the severe but hopefully temporary impact of COVID-19. The commentary introduces the practical validation of some critical components of the strategy, described in three manuscripts detailing recent project results in Asia and Africa. The main phases of a cervical screening program are 1) primary screening of women in the general population, 2) triage testing of the small minority of women that screen positive to determine need for treatment, and 3) treatment of triage-positive women thought to be at highest risk of precancer or even cancer.

Purpose: When used for cervical cancer primary screening, liquid-based cytology (LBC) has a high specificity but a low sensitivity. For histological diagnosis of high-grade lesions, p16 immunostaining has proven to be useful. Therefore, our objective was to evaluate the use of p16 immuno-cytology as a primary screen and a secondary screen after primary high-risk human papillomavirus (hrHPV) screening or LBC screening.
